Hi All:
So right now I am booked in seat 1K on a LH 744 and was wondering if there are any negatives to being in the first row. Does the TV come out of the armrest and in turn make the seat narrower or is there less leg room since the front wall is right there? I guess I'm just wondering if it makes more sense to sit in row 2 or if it's really all the same. (btw, the pictures I've found and seat guru really don't seem to answer this question).

I'm not certain about the monitor, but anytime you sit up front in the nose of a 747 you usually have a bit less privacy because the people in 1ac are closer to you. The nice thing though is that you feel like you are in your own private cabin as you are facing the nose. I'm not sure how Lufthansa does its meals, but sometimes thats how I decide where to sit. I'm almost Gold Elite with Etihad, but they seem not to ask meal preferences based on status unlike United. You could be the first one to get asked for meal service theoretically but United special services and 1K members would often get their orders taken first.
If meal selection is important it would be a good idea where to sit, but I don't know if Lufthansa does take meal orders based on status. I flew them a couple of times I was a star gold, but I don't remember them running around like United flight attendants used to do. For me there is nothing worse when you are set on a specific item not to have it available especially if your second choice is bad!

I prefer seats in the nose section but further back - I think it is kind of crampy sitting right behind the "nose" because you don´t get to see anything but the wall.
If you sit like three rows back, it´s much more comfortable in my point of view.
The nose sector in general is very nice, it´s extremely quiet - Engineers at airliners.net will give a reason to explain to why the cabin is so quiet - seems the airflow touches the aircraft further at the back, leaving the nose segment, after the noisy retracting of the front gear, heavenly quiet.
One more thing if you fly during winter time. The wardrobe is in the front section as well. So before take off the F/A's will bring many jackets up front, but that is only prior pushback.
Oh and one more thing: You are sitting really in the first row, even ahead of us pilots up there

I sat in 1A on the LH 744 a few weeks ago. As mentioned above, the tv does come out of the armrest. There is bigger monitor above the closet that keeps the flight map on throughout the flight. Though I was disappointed with LH overall J product, I had quite a nice flight and suggest that you stick to your seat.
It is really quiet up front, except as noted, the gear retracting.

Which is a really cool sound in my opinion. It always impresses how quiet the whole cabin becomes when retraction is complete. The nose gear also makes some interesting sounds during taxi.
Unless you suffer from some level of claustrophobia, 1 A/K are the best seats in the house. Another advantage is that you don't have to hop over the person in the seat next to yours if you need to get out.

I enjoyed my flight on LH much more a bit further back as the first and second row seem a bit cramped. Also the monitor with the flight map would annoy me intensely on a night flight as I prefer it to be dark. Therefore I always travel with an eye mask.

The monitors should be off during night. Once the service is done and all shades are closed the screens should be off so that it is dark in the cabin and people can sleep - just like you want it.
