I'm going to visit a friend in Denmark in December and an option is to overnight at AMS and do some spotting. Anyone know of somewhere to stay that is cheap (less the around 80 euros) and preferably have bike hire for getting to the runways? I have been spotting in AMS before so unless the accommodation is cheap I think I will save the case and just have a few hours on the viewing terrace.

If I stayed in the city is it ok to take a rented bike on the train out to the airport? I have been on the train to and from the airport to the city but don't remember if bikes are allowed.

Just returned stayed at the NH which has bikes..it's 5 min walk to the end of runway 06 the Kaagbaan.
Across the road is the Bastion which is around 100 Euro he NH about the same.
Both in a great spot with courtesy buses to the airport.

The Etap and Ibis on the far side of the field are cheap (by dutch standards), but they are quite far from the action at times. Still, no prob's if you have a car (essential to really 'do' AMS).

I will check them out, thanks for the info.

Unfortunately I can't really afford the cost or time to rent a car as I will probably only have an afternoon or a morning to go spotting.

On a slightly unrelated note - When booking KLM from BHX-CPH they give several options for connecting flight. All of them don't allow any time for even a quick trip to the viewing terrace. Is it possible somehow to get a longer connection? I guess most people want as quick a stop as possible but I want the opposite!

I stayed at the IBIS and they offer a free shuttle to/from airport so no need for a car or bike really. The IBIS might be out of your price range, Etap might be the better offer. The shuttle serves both hotels as they are more or less on the same property and share the parking lot. Also, there is a McDonalds within walking distance (about 10 minutes) and you can get some pretty good views of planes landing on the runway right next to it (sorry, not sure of the "official" name of it).

Another option is a newer hotel called soemthing like "Hotel M". Its sort of an upscale boutique/budget hotel. It's located a few minutes walk past the shuttle bus stops for the IBIS/Etap hotels.

It depends on the KLM schedule. I'm not sure how many flights they offer between BHX-AMS and AMS-CPH. Check their website for each segment and if they offer an early morning flight from BHX then see if they offer a later afternoon/early evening flight to CPH. Then try booking the respective flight. If the website doesn#t allow that you may have to contact their call center and book online telling the agent which flights you want.

No problem. Good luck with the planning.

p.s. December isn't exactly the best time of year for riding a bike in Netherlands....cold, wet and rainy. I know the Dutch do it but then again they're Dutch!

I looked at doing something similar to this last year, and I almost booked this place:
http://www.campingamsterdamsebos.nl
I know it's a campsite, but they have 1 or 2 person heated cabins from EUR27.50 to EUR35 (heating - EUR5!)
It is easily accessible from AMS by bus 199, and they rent bicycles

Try a travel website i.e. Expedia which offers "multi stop" (or try this on klm.com). then put specific dates and times for every segment and you should be fine. As long as you have less than 24 hours connecting time and the required booking class is avble on the flights, then it's considered as a transfer and you can get this at the same price. If it's over 24 hours it's a stopover which most intraeuropean fares do not allow.

It's actually the "Citizen M"

If I was you, I'd stay at the airside Yotel. It's 76 EUR for the night (up to 14 hours I believe) and if you want a shorter time, even cheaper (as little as 40 EUR for 4 hours).

I will have a go at doing it that way. They seem to have about three flights out of BHX. Of course most will want the shortest connection so that's all they give. I would be happy with enough of a transfer time to go up to the spotting terrace for two or three hours. Not sure how long I would need as I assume it would require going through passport control to get to the terrace?
KLM is about £150 but BHX is pretty near me. Easyjet is about £80 but would require a bus/train so would work out about £100. I'd rather pay the extra £50 to fly KLM if I could have a few hours spotting too.

Thanks for the continued comments guys. They are very helpful.

We stayed at the Best Western Museumhotel when we visited AMS. It was really nice and only $65 USD a night plus tax. Very reasonable.

Good goes around!
