I'm scheduled to fly positive space on AA 1239 MCO-DFW tomorrow for an FAA medical exam. I'm traveling as an A12 (which is supposedly space confirmed), however, the flight is overbooked in Y and there are no fare buckets available that would provide me with a seat. I called the AA non-rev number (I'm new to AA and don't have access to JetNet yet) and the rep told me that while it was overbooked in Y, F had available seats.
Will AA put me into F as a positive space traveler even though I'm booked in Y or should I try to reschedule the exam? Any help from the AA guys on the forum would be greatly appreciated.

I did not work for AA and can't speak 100% about their policy, but generally it goes like this:
When a flight is overbooked the load priority (who to take) looks like:
Premium passenger (incl. elites)
Full fare passenger
Discount fare passenger
NRPS (Non-rev Positive space, you.)
NRSA (Non-rev Seat Available)
And if they ended up with a situation where F is open and Y is over, they will put you on F, with the priorty above. Exception is that if your ticket allows upgrade you will get on before the discounted Y passengers.
However I suspect this will not happen. In most cases, in an industry where most F are taken by upgrading elites, I think there's a very good chance they'll run out of F seats before they run out of upgrade candidates. It's not unknown to have F open without any elite to upgrade and they just pull anyone into F, but it's extremely rare in domestic routes. What will most likely happen is they'll upgrade all elites to F, vacating their booked Y seats, then onload standby passengers according to the above order.
And they'll rebook you (I think) if you end up bumped. Or if there's an earlier flight they might be willing to put you on it to alleviate the later one. So if you are worried show up for the early flight (if there is one.)

If you are booked in Y, and don't have a seat assigment, you will most likely get and upgrade to F at the gate. Even with a seat assigment as A12 you are eligible for an upgrade. In that case you would be listed as UPGE on the priority list, below revenue upgrade requests, but above nonrevs.
