If You Had $10million To Buy A Private Jet

Hey guys,

My girlfriend asked me this tonight since she knows i'm really into aviation, and i thought i'd ask you guys what your thoughts were.

If you were given 10 million USD dollars, what plane (either new or used) would you buy to be your private jet? And the best part, you get FREE FUEL, free hanger space anywhere you want, and you get your own set of pilots on call 24/7. And, you get free maintenance for life.

My answer was simple, my favorite plane; the Boeing 727. Something like Trump had, maybe a little newer (his was a -100 from the late 60's).

What plane would you get?

747SP. Landing fees will be killer.

BTW, it's "hangar"

For $10,000,000 you pretty much would be stuck with used. Perhaps a small Citation costs that little new.

I'd probably try to pick up a used Citation Sovereign or Falcon 50. Runway performance would be important.

For $10 million, you can either get an old, but giant jet, or something small, but new-ish. Since operating costs don't seem to matter, you may as well get some old 747 for like $2 million (provided you get free interior redesign as well).

For something made in my lifetime, you could pick up a fairly new Hawker 800 or something along those lines.

Wow, that's actually a tough question

I think I'd go with a used Citation X (a new one's definitely out of the price range). It would sure make all our family trips easy- nothing like being able to cruise at Mach 0.94!

I know someone will chime in, but the Citation X won't do .94M.

Wait, you can get a Citation X with winglets now? Never seem one equipped as such before. Learn something new every day I guess.

Everything else is free, this is what I am taking too! Than get myself enough training and right seat time to get into the left seat

If it was $10 million to buy and use it would be a TBM-850.

I would definitely buy a 80's built 742. That would go for about 3 million.
Add 2 million to upgrade some navigation etc
And the other 5 million I'd use to rebuild the interior. No gold or anything lavish, but some Greta seats for a bunch of friends a nice bedroom for long haul flights!

And of course, save a little bit to get a 742 type rating ! I'd be flying the beauty myself.

$10 million is only about 5% (if that) of what I'd need to by a 777-200LR. I guess I would invest that $10 million for several years first.

I'd go for an F16, their new price was only $15m in the 90s, so I guess used ones will be available for less than $10m. Nothing so cool as having (and flying!) your own F16...

If US DoD doesn't allow me to have my own F16 (the biggest hurdle here), I'd go for a Sea Fury or a Corsair. As I don't need to travel a lot, it sure need to be something I can have fun with and sound great!
I think I'd go on retirement with the remaining $9m...

A Boeing 720B if I could find one. Maybe the one stored at Malta. A million or so for the plane, a couple million more to make it airworthy and then the legal fees to get permission to paint it in Western's old Indian head livery. Also would want the interior in original passenger configuration, not the luxury corporate setup like a certain actors old Qantas 707-138.

Probably an old 747, with like the rear third full with seats at like 36 in pitch, for anyone who might want to fly with me, and the rest of it, including upperdeck, for me!

Forget buying a private jet, I'd use that money to fund an account with Delta Private Jets so I could arrange whatever type of private jet my trip requires plus I would get instant Diamond Medallion status which is useful for those times in which taking a Delta flight is more logical than a private jet. $10 million can buy a lot of flights. Sticking with a single a/c type limits your flight options, as you would have to make a tech stop along the way to refuel if the jet you buy doesn't have the legs to do a transcontinental run. One of the reasons why folks have private jets is to save time because in the business world, time is money.

27 Post contains images JetBlue777 : I agree with you on this one! If the OP didn't say it has to be less than $10M, then I'd definitely choose the 777-200LR. What a beautiful machine!
28 Post contains images Tigerguy : Well, I'd have to be greedy and get more than one... $10 mil would easily cover a 727-200 and a 747-300 (or an early -400 if the correct price came al
29 Post contains links and images PC12Fan : 10 mil huh? Well, I'm thinking along the lines of woodreau in post #4. I'd use 5 towards - and this may come as a shocker with my user name - a PC-12N

31 aerorobnz : I want the DC8-62 that is currently for sale in VIP trim for around 6million euros
32 Post contains images airtrainer : I'm not really into biz jets so wouldn't. I'd rather use that money to fly F for years
33 tsugambler : Does anyone know if I could get a DC-10 or MD-11 for that price? That would be my pick.
34 Braniff747SP : A Boeing 727. Get permission from the railroad to paint it into PA colors.... Full PA interior. No executive config for me...
35 Babybus : I couldn't bear the idea of my private aircraft sitting around all day unused. I'd probably just use the money to buy first class / business class sea
36 aerorobnz : There are DC10 freighters for that price, but MD11s still are around 20 million and above (also freighters of course)
37 SRQKEF : Yeah, I would probably agree on that
38 Post contains images SmithAir747 : I would get myself either a 747-100/200 or a 747SP. I would prefer the 747SP (it's smaller, but still a 747), but a Classic would be fine too! I would
