Hi Folks,
VA used a 77W SYD to MEL on Nov 1st, for extra uplift (and PR!) for the Melbourne Cup. I have a few questions about the flight.
1. Did the flight depart from the International terminal?
2. If not what gate number in T3 did it use or was it on a remote stand?
I know Virgin's Sydney terminal is the old AN one and it handled 762s but the 77W is just a little bigger!
AND likewise the return flight, did it depart the Virgin domestic terminal at MEL?

The VA terminal in SYD doesn't have any gates that are capable of handling the 77W without causing major disruptions, so pax were bussed out (from gate 41) to the aircraft at a remote stand (similar to the A380 that flew SYD-MEL during the strikes). Not sure which stand they used, but it would likely have been over near the cargo area.
There was no return flight... QF had already been flying for a day by the time the VA 77W made the flight, and it was apparently half empty. There is a trip report on the flight: MEL-SYD-MEL - DJ B77W - Special Flight (by AeroplaneFreak Nov 1 2011 in Trip Reports)
And as an aside, T2 today handles A332's, which are bigger than 762s!
