Okay,
so I was booked from GRU with Lufthansa, and when I arrived on a domestic flight at GRU, there she was: the Majestic B744. I was kind of looking forward to it.....a pleasant red-eye on an all time classic plane.
But what shattered "my dreams" as I entered the cattle-class......no nice screens to fiddle the night away with!!
A small general screen, positioned at an awkward angle for many seats, was all they had to offer!
The crew was friendly enough and all that, but the food and the service mediocre, so I expected more from such an airline.
It was very 90's, so to speak.
Anybody has similar experiences??
Where you expected more from an "A"-airline perhaps??

Many of the 744s are getting new F and Y class with inseat video. Not all of them refurbished yet... I think almost half of the fleet has the new cabin interieur.

DABVA;VB;VC;VD;VE;VF;VH;VK;VL;VN get the new cabins in 2011.
DABTA,TB,TC,TD,TE,TF,TH are slated to be phased out and won't receive a new cabin.
The 13 remaining ones will have the new economy class installed successively over 2012.
I have gone out of my way to avoid LH 744 in the past and would continue to do so. The A380s are very nice, but as a lowly eco passenger I'd do my utmost to get on an A330/A340/767 for the seating arrangement only.
My main entertainment was that "centre aileron", never had a seat so close to it.
Very active piece of equipment during the descent and landing.
How's that for IFE?
Cheers,

I have flown on DABTB (Brandenburg), DABVW (Wolfsburg), and DABVY (Nordrhein-Westfalen). When I was on them, they did not have any IFE. Oh well, for alte kockers (old farts) like me who used to fly DC-8s across the Atlantic, it is not the end of the world.
The seats were certainly much more comfortable than LH's new A340-600s. And the old 747 flew past several Airbuses and DC-10s. The old birds are fast!
I have to admit that my son, who is from the digital age, was very bored with the games of spielkarten with me! And I read books and magazines, watched the ailerons, and actually saw some icebergs way down in the Atlantic near Canada.
The Brandenburg aircraft, which I see will be retired, was in remarkably good shape for a 20+ year old plane.

Quoting notaxonrotax (Reply 4): It seemed all B744's were in at FRA this morning.
Amazing, the fleet they have! Beautiful planes.
Many airplanes on the ground due to christmas. A lot less flights are planned.
Quoting notaxonrotax (Reply 4): So not all of them will get the new seats?
Are some phased out perhaps?
Not all. Some will be phased out in 2012. But not sure which ones and how many. Depends on the forecast for 2012 and the economics. And when the 748i joins, I am sure some old 744s will go.

Quoting wilco737 (Reply 6): Used to be 19, now 18 after the RUH crash.
Oh I forgot about that! I actually saw the wreckage of that when I still lived out there... glad it wasn't a passenger aircraft and that everyone got out alive.
I actually specifically avoided booking a trip via FRA to BOS from MAN to avoid the LH 747-400. I know my mother would kill me if I booked a flight with no entertainment options for her (she'd spend the entire flight complaining to me). Still not actually booked it yet but if it's with LH it will be via MUC on an A340-600 as I can guarantee that it will have IFE on it and it's a new type!
Personally, I don't mind IFE being absent. I'm more than happy to listen to music and look out of the window. As long as they've got airshow, I'm happy!
