My parents are on Iceland Air Flight#688, I was tracking it and just noticed it has diverted to KBOS! Anyone have any info as to why the diversion occurred? Fuel sounds unlikely since it was almost in northern Maine.... MX?

Medical emergency? Looks like they're already scheduled to leave in 30 min or so onto KEF..

I noticed that at flightaware. Half an hour must be a bit optimistic. Have not got a call from my parents yet, maybe they are not allowed to turn on their cells.

Just got a hold of my parents on the phone. Diversion due to something with the toilet they said. They could see someone with something that looked like a vacuum up there. Why would they divert if only one toilet on a 757 is defect? Must cost a fortune!

I once diverted on FI 689 from KEF to SFB and landed at Gander because of winds. Never seen a diversion eastbound tho.

Quoting WF2BNN (Reply 3):

You can't tell whether the toilet was just in'op or it was leaking any fluids into the cabin / into the fuselage.
While not prone to it, just imagine what a polar liquid with a fairly good conductivity (as water) can cause if it shortcuts an electrical circuit.

Potential bad smell would be another issue ...
