What To Expect To Hawaii?

HI guys and gals.

I've just been to the travel agent for a trip in August from LHR to LAX to HNL to SFO to LHR. While they haven't given me the airline or the flight number (for some strange reason) they have given me the times so I have been able to work them out as VS7 744 to LAX, HA3 A330 to HNL, with the same types back. I was wondering what to expect from their respective products as I have heard the LGW/MAN 747's are in a state and wondered what the LHR 747's condition is. I am also unaware of the product of the HA A330's. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Cheers in advance!

If I were flying to Hawaii from London, that would be my ideal itinerary (although if I was flying Y I might prefer a 340 on the LHR-LAX leg). I haven't flown from LHR in a year or so but the last time I flew to SFO it was on a VS 744 and was absolutely fine. I have also heard bad things about the planes from LGW but I've never flown one.

Hawaiian gives great service; I've always been happy with them as well, although I usually fly AS for miles purposes.

Would help to know what class you are flying.

Thanks for the quick response!

I am flying in Y unfortunately. My apologies I thought I mentioned that but clearly not.

From an aviation enthusiast point of view I am a bit dissapointed as I'd hoped for a A340, A330, 767, 747 combo but oh well, I'm just glad to be going!

While we are at it, does Hawaiian offer PTV's? Its not the be all and end all but I would prefer one.

Funilly enough my travel agent has rung me to say the LHR-LAX and SFO-LHR flights can be changed to United for a cheaper price.

How do VS and UA stack up against each other. (Flights are UA935 (772) and I'm unsure which SFO flight it is but they are both 772's anyway.)

Really? Routing through SFO/SEA/YVR/ANC is much shorter and all of these airports are much nicer to transit through than LAX.

Why didn't you book the flights yourself then? I have managed to put together Europe - Hawaii for 500 quid. Getting a variety of planes is not much of a problem either on such a route.

They do, but I believe they charge you $10 to use them.

I'd stick with VS and HA unless the price differential was sufficently big and assuming similar schedules and travel durations.

Normally I would but the flight times are more favourable with the current flights. (e.g. VS7 leaves at 11.30 getting in at 14.15ish. Much better than VS23). Saying that I didn't particularly consider putting it together myself (no clue why). It's something I will look into.

That bad huh? I am doing 3 and 4 day stop overs in SFO and LAX so travel durations are a non factor. Though as posted above I am considering doing it myself so what airlines would you guys choose, with this itinerary? Sorry for all the questions but I am not a particularly seasoned long haul traveller since most of my holidays have been in europe. Cheers for the responses guys!

I wasn't very clear....I meant the choice of airline; itinerary was the wrong word. Of course I'd rather transit at SFO, all things being equal. But if my other option was to go United in Y all the way I'd choose VS/HA via LAX.

VS is significantly better than United for transatlantic travel. The main problem with VS in Y (and increasingly in J) these days is the food, which isn't great. But they do feed you almost constantly, which is great for passing the time. You might want to buy a few bits at the airport just in case you don't like it though.

Also bear in mind if you're going to be doing a lot of travel in the future you might want to consider what mileage plan is the most useful to you. I sometimes take a small hit on comfort/convenience for the sake of some good miles.

HA's A330's are brand new. They are known for probably the best Y US domestic service to Hawaii because they still serve a complimentary meal in Y, in seat avod, and new planes. They have gotten great reviews here for their A330 service to the islands and on other sites. (We AA loyalist to Hawaii, so this is just what I have read.)

I also have a holiday booked for July-August to Hawaii. My itinerary is JFK-HNL-JHM (HA 51; Island Air 516). I don't mind the long-haul; I actually sleep better when I know that I won't have to change planes at some mid-point. I allowed 1.5 hours for the transfer in HNL. I hope it's enough time. The operation at JHM looks a bit scary and exciting at the same time!

You should be fine with a 90 minute transfer at HNL; the HA and Island Air termnals are all but colocated with the gates being about a 5 minute walk from one another. If you are checked all the way through, it will be even easier. JHM is a fun airport to fly into and out of. The takeoffs and landings afford amazing views of Kaanapali and are almost aircraft carrier-like. There's at least one awesome You Tube video out there which I will try to find and link in a bit...
