So, my best friend wants to go to Amsterdam for a city break in March. We're looking at 29 March-1 April. I am not so keen as I don't really want to miss classes on that Thursday, so I am trying to leave later in the afternoon but I don't think that is really possible, so I will have to make arrangements with my professors.
I'm not so keen on my options, I'd only like to spend 150€ per person but the idea of spending 11 hours in Deutsche Bahn is just as unappealing as the idea of connecting through FRA.
I was thinking about the following:
SZG-FRA-AMS on VO/LH for 188€ per person which gets us in for dinner.
SZG-MUC on ÖBB (Rail) then MUC-AMS on CityNightLine Rail for 133€ (but with a hellish return involving 4 connections).
If anyone can think of a better option, that is greatly appreciated. I looked at 4U to CGN but that doesn't work as there is no flight on Thursday 29 March. HV is not possible as my Timbuk2 bag is too big by 5cm.

I recently traveled from DUS back to the Netherlands by train. It involved 5 trains and 4 transfers. Going to AMS would mean 1 train less but it's still a very long ride. Plus the NS (Dutch Railroads) as well as DB are IMO very expensive..

If you fly to DUS early on the 30th, you can still get the €152,52 return fare. From DUS to Amsterdam Centraal and back, you can still get tickets for €24 one way per person on the ICE, which takes between 2:11 (outbound) and a maximum 3:15 (return). So you're looking at €200 return plus an arrival on Friday afternoon.
But how about Transavia to RTM? Amadeus says you can get there and back for €102 if you book through ebookers, departure at 15:55 and arrival at 17:25 (return: 14:10 to 15:40).
edit: Transavia.com is €3 cheaper per person. IMHO, that's ideal.

I don't know. But how would they be in AMS/RTM...? and I'd still have to pay 30€ (Sum) to check a bag. I think I'll just suck it up and pay LH the 180€. KL was 90€ from MUC with reasonable times and train tickets from 20€ R/T (with BahnCard) but I didn't book it in time. If I had any sense, I'd take HV to AMS from SZG...but I don't so I'll just pay and enjoy FRA...

I flew HV out of RTM a few weeks ago, coincidentally on the same trip as my DUS - Netherlands train trip. At RTM they were very strict, even BEFORE the security check all bags were measured and passengers were send back to the security check if it was too large..

That seems harsh Martijn... I just flew with OV from ARN-TLL on a Saab 340 and I didn't pay to check my bag when I booked online.. However when I got to the airport they didn't allow anyone to have hand baggage of a certain size so they all went in the hold for free.. Kudos to OV I thought..

That's because you flew on an aircraft with overhead bins that were insufficient for the kind of cabin luggage allowed. The same thing happens when you fly, say, CMH-EWR-FRA on a Dash 8 and a 777: you check your cabin luggage at the gate in CMH, get it back at the gate in EWR and take it with you aboard the 777.

It does happen from time to time, I suppose it depends on the size of your bag, the number of passengers and the crew. A while ago, while I was boarding a CRJ, an F/A told me that I was going to have trouble fitting my rollaboard into the overhead bin. I said that I would be able to "squash it a bit", made it fit and all was fine.
