It has been in the press in the last few years, that air fares are rising. I have noticed some increases, for example if I want to fly from London to the west coast of the USA in mid summer, that is more expensive than it used to be a couple of years ago. Then again I paid £55 return to the Canaries (travelled two weeks ago) and I am of to Cyprus later this week for £60 return, (all from London) Bargain .
Are you finding it harder to get good fares in this high oil price environment?

It's not just the high oil price, it's also the rising cost of APD which will increase yet again on April 1. Factor in the Jubillee celebrations and the Olympics and flights to/from the UK will cost more this year.

Quoting BA677 (Thread starter): On the other hand US fares now show all fees and taxes at once now? or has that change been effective yet
I don't now, but in the EU this has to be done I believe. Easy jet complied, but at the same time, discreetly put the price of paying by card up to £9, plus you cant get round it by paying with a electron card any more .

I think air fares are roughly the same today as they were in the mid 2000s, except it seems to be less common today to find these super low Ryanair, Easyjet or Spirit fares as you could find in 2004 or 2005. Like the 0.01 EUR fares, or even the 0.00 fares, (all included) you sometimes found in Europe.
Also, credit card fees have only started to appear in Europe in the last 5 years. Before that, credit card fees were largely unheard of.

But you only gave examples of UK routes ...
If you look at SE Asia there will be plenty of cheap fares on routes which are facing more competition. Look at Air Asia's expansion between KUL and Tokyo, look at the Air Asia X's forthcoming service from KUL to SYD and look at the arrival of Scoot to liven things up.

What's a good fare?
I do find summer US-Europe-US flights are expensive so I just don't book those anymore; I do it the other way around.
Generally speaking, I don't look for the lowest price so maybe I haven't noticed increases... I find what I consider good deals all the time but what a person used to Spirit and/or Ryanair might consider scalping. Overall I think prices are going down to destinations where air travel is expanding (e.g. Eastern Europe) and up where it's being consolidated/merged or reduced (e.g. USA--what was 180-200$ a couple of years ago seems to be 250$ now, on a specific route)
Numerically, airfares will continue to rise--it's called inflation.
