Now that there are no more Concorde flights, I was wondering which flight out there has the highest average speed if you just look a the flight schedule? I know my fastest flight was SQ 297 SIN-CHC. It had a scheduled flight time of 9:40 h (580 min) and a distance of 8401 km (5220 mi, 4536 nm), so an average speed of 869 km/h (540 mph, 469 knots) from gate to gate. There must be a faster flight out there...

All aircraft are designed to cruise at around Mach .80-.86. I have been on a United (Continental) 777 from IAH-CDG where we were averaging 740mph over the Atlantic in some parts due to a VERY generous tailwind. We were hovering very close to the speed of sound if you are going by ground speed. Of course, the aircraft computers obviously thought it was much slower as in still air, no current commercial aircraft can do these speeds. So it all depends on what kind of tail winds you have. On a recent trip between NRT and BKK, we had a 200mph headwind making the flight some 7.5 hours! Was horrid!
