The LAX-DEN segment on a 763 is a PMUA a/c. If you are traveling in Econ you have a decent chance of being offered a buy up to E+. I don't see many Econ to Business/First buy ups showing up anymore.

From my experience last summer, flying from DEN to ORD on a 772 (new config.) I was offered an upgrade from E to J for $200.00+ (I don't remember the exact price, but somewhere around that line) Although the night before the flight, I was already upgraded to E+ but my ticket was originally E. Also, it was a miles+money award flight.
I think you'd have a good chance, considering that's is a wide-body, so more seats are available. UA has a lot of upgrade options, you could try checking your reservation 24hours before your flight, maybe they'll offer some upgrades.

United got rid off upgrades to upper classes for low cost and even with miles they want 20K plus $500 to upgrade. They charge to be on the stnad by list. Your chances are only for E+ upgrade. Unless you have some mileage status with them.

I'd be hesitant, even if it is only a Saturday morning - it's still a hub to hub route which will likely have a large number of elites.
