In a couple of weeks, I need to fly BNA-BWI in the morning and BWI-BDL in the afternoon, spending the night in Hartford. I'll have to book this on two separate itineraries, as WN does not multi-city ticket. Will WN permit me to check a bag all the way through to BDL in Nashville in the morning? It would be great to not have to lug my suitcase in to Baltimore and back to the airport.

You easily can book an openjaw ticket on WN, also sameday.
Goto "Advanced Search" tucked away under the normal flight search, then "Add(itonal) Flight".
Enter itinerary as BNA - BWI - BDL for the same day, set Departure for 1st sector to "before noon", for 2nd sector to "noon-6pm" (or as youre preference is)
And you get your flights displayed in two section below eachother, which will be on a single PNR.

Assuming that doing what HT said doesn't work (and I imagine that it will work), you could always ask the check-in agent if they could do this for you. I have no experience with doing this, but in my opinion, if the computer system that WN uses allows it, the check-in agents should do this.

To me experience (which is limited to the Southwestern U.S.) WN-staff really goes out of their way when dealing with customers.

I told this story before, but my highlight with WN was, me arriving at LBB holding a ticket for SAT - ELP (I intended to fly AA LBB-DFW-SAT) and finding my AA flight being delayed meaning that I would risk getting stranded at SAT late at night.
Approaching the WN-counter two agents helped me to get a ticket for their departure due in 25 minutes (no bags to check), still charging me a discounted fare; they also canceled my SAT-ELP reservation and used the FlightFund to pay most of my new LBB-DAL-ELP reservation. All this in less than 5 (or even less) minutes during one agent made all the bookings and the other chatted to me about the time he had spent being stationed in Germany serving within the US-Forces.
