UA 739: Underwhelming?

I flew on one a few days ago from MIA-EWR in Y (The bird had Y+ installed). The crew was good and the flight was on-time, but I wasn't thrilled with the product offering at all.

Within the first 5 minutes of sitting down I felt significant back and neck pain -- more in the neck area than anything else. I looked at the seat itself and it couldn't be more than an inch thick. It was doable for 2.5 hours, but I couldn't imagine doing BOS-SFO on one of those things. In addition, I felt the directv product was a rip off. 7.99 for 2.5 hours with NO FREE channels? Com'on, really UA? Even DL has free channels on their avod equipped aircraft. I don't understand why they do this when the PMUA 757, A32S, 767, and 777 have free IFE and all PMCO 757 have it as well. It's not a consistent product offering across the board. Does anybody know if UA is planning on altering this system?

The PMUA 757 going down had much better seats and a free movie played on CRTs. The crew was disgruntled, but the hard product was stronger.

Rant over (I'll save my rant about the poor take off performance.) What do y'all think of the 739?

I've flown Trans-Cons on them, in regular Y, several times. Never noticed anything out of the ordinary in terms of seat comfort.

Speak to the LiveTV folks, they installed the product and they're the ones charging passengers (not UA). Livetv collects the money.

I really enjoy them, my first 739 flight was January 2002 from EWR-CUN. My last one was EWR-LAS-EWR on the 900ER, the inside of the aicraft seems decades more modern than the UA 757 I flew DEN-EWR last June.

Did you ever stop and think that maybe it's just you. I've flown on quite a few airlines in the US, and found all the seats to be comfortable with the exception being F9 airbus. I don't know why but for whatever reason I could never get comfortable in their seats, and this was on several different occasions. The flights and crew were just fine, and will fly them again, I just know ahead of time that I won't be comfortable.

I love them, the B739 and ER IMHO provide a nice heavy feel of a B722. Have no issue with the seats as the OP mentions. No complaints, and it is a Boeing!!!

UA's TV product is different than DL, B6 or VX. UA did not pay for the installation and does not earn any of the revenue from the sales. It all goes to LiveTV, so you won't see it change and free programs offered. Free programs earn LiveTV nothing and they have no intention of not earning money.

Offering complimentary overhead IFE make UA stand apart from the rest of the airlines in the US. No other airline had free main screen IFE on every flight including headphones. It has merged with UA/CO and resulted in varying product experience.

UA has had to swap out or replace all the seats on the 900ER aircraft from the original Koito seats to the B/E Pinnacle seat. I'm not sure which one you had, but the B/E Aerospace Pinnacle seat is very common. I believe that the B/E Pinnacle slimline and the Weber 5751 seats have become the most popular seat on new build airplanes. AA and DL are Weber customers. CO is a B/E customer.

In the end, basically all the slimline seats are about the same to me. There are about 6 different seats currently made for economy that are commonly found. They are Weber, B/E and Recaro. They have a standard and slimline version. Slimline tends to be less comfortable, but results in more legroom for the same pitch.

I love the heavy take offs of the KLM 737-900 (though not an -ER version) but I can imagine it can't replace a 752 in terms of comfort. An A321 could handle the job better I think.

I also think that it is too much a 737, I love the 738 which has the right lenght and wingspan.

For UA, the 739ER is a perfectly good replacement for the domestic configured 757 in my opinion. It is not as good as the ETOPS BusinessFirst configured 757s, but typically those do not operate the same routes. The only difference is that first class has to have economy walk through while boarding. The 739ERs have a lavatory between economy and first class, so there is no disturbances during flight. The seats in economy and first class have the exact same width and pitch on both the airplanes.

Some like the turn left exclusive feel on a 757, but the A321 has no turn left exclusive feel since it usually boards through door 1 as well. The A320 series is a bit wider than the 737 series, so that might be a difference noticed. Without the midcabin lavatory, I can see a bit of a difference as it is a long walk to the back of the airplane from the forward section of economy.

Of course it could be that the 737 isn't as attractive. I tend to agree but that is in the eye of the beholder.

Flew IAH-ORD on the (now second) newest 739 in the fleet, which had the Sky interior. It was VERY nice making the journey more enjoyable overall compared to the usual older 73's I take from IAH-SAN almost weekly.

For whatever reason, the airplane was flat out warm. It could be because my seat mate to my left decided to RUN the IAH concourses and sweat the entire time up to ORD and I had to take the grunt of his radiating body heat? Who knows, but, I enjoyed it. I look forward to future trips on them.

I think it's a joke. I don't recall which model 737 I was on in F class the other day but the plane was new and had nothing installed. No IFE, etc nothing. The same puttered soap was in the lav was offered though. I guess UA is committed to getting rid of the even crappier Airbus NB fleet with the 100/100 737 order. For once I'd like to see the new United offer a consisted product from hub to hub flying. Give me a 752 with pods in F class on EWR-SFO. I do the flight often enough to warrant complaints. Used the 753 and thought it would be great - wrong! What a bucket of bolts. What was CO thinking when they bought them? F class is crap. Give me the AA three class 762 on transcons any day. Least I know what I'm getting and too expect.

Rant over.

I miss the old Anet.
