I am booked on a P-class ticket (Domestic First) with Delta. As per SkyMiles, booking fare classes F, A, P, J, C, D, S, I, W, Y, B, & M fare classes earn you all the same higher bonuses and higher MQM's.
Within these fare classes, they range from First Class, to Business Class, to Premium Economy (W), and then higher Economy Class Fares for an Atlanta to Los Angeles v.v. fare.
So, which is the better deal? Booking a Domestic Business D, S, I, fare, or a W fare, or Y, B, M fares versus F, A, P fares to get a First Class seat? How does this work for a passenger that wants/pays for First Class. What is the difference? When is a Business Class fare available versus a First Class fare? I don't mind paying $1,500.00 for a comfortable flight, but are there any other alternatives to perhaps paying $1,000.00 for the same seat for the same trip? How exactly does this work at time of booking? (I've usually booked the same routing for $1,300 roundtrip and sometimes $900.00 roundtrip.)

I am a DL SkyMiles Platinum, and don't know all the ins-and-outs of DL's pricing/fare classes so I hope some of this info will be helpful to you. If I am mistaken, let's hope a DL person can correct or elaborate further for all of us.
There is no difference in service and likely fare amounts between domestic First Class and domestic Business Class. A flight is shown as "Business" if the domestic operated portion is of an international flight, such as DL17 ATL-LAX-SYD or DL65 MAN-ATL-LAX. These domestic segments may involve a "change of gauge" or aircraft change but the flight is operated as a direct service for global distribution display purposes. Exceptions to this domestc service standard is the JFK-SFO/LAX market that is "Business Elite" with the business class 757 layout and Michelle Bernstein inspired "chef" selection meal service. Michelle's selection may still be Bar-B-Que chicken, but its marketed that way on this prime business route.
Fares also may dictate how you get moved from one class to another. A "P" fare is generally an automatic upgrade to F as a coach fare due to its higher price. A full Y fare may confirm in F as a P or A class for all or parts of your itinerary, but not always so be watchful what class you're being confirmed in. "I" class is generally discounted international Business Elite.
Premium Economy - W - was initially set-up for international itineraries only, but may become a new domestic fare class as this new service is introduced system-wide. A recent change/addition is the ability to "buy up" to preferred seats/Economy Comfort at the 24 hour OLCI time for domestic segments as aircraft types are modified for Economy Comfort. Right now, why "buy up" to W when you can get these better seats, if stilll available, at 24 hour OLCI?
I book only in coach, but know the higher fare classes get me bonus miles/MQM's and better upgrade options up to 5 days out. A recent trip I booked at last minute got me roundtrip First Class (P) but my actual ticket fare basis was B so my boss and company did not fuss at me flying in opulent luxury to RIC. DL showed me as "coach" due to the fare basis, I accrued bonus miles/MQM's on a B fare , but I rode in first class for the complete roundtrip.
If you request a "First/Business" fare, prices with schedule will display lowest to highest for date requested, based on seat availability. You will find for example that DL17 ATL-LAX will generally be pricier in first class, not because it is sold as "Business Class" but demand by time of day, day of week, and even popularity when it operates with the 77L that continues on to SYD. It is considered a "prime" flight ATL-LAX and will generally have higher fares and fare classes for travel in First and Coach. Medallion elites like it because of increased seat capacity in First that helps their upgrade chances. Same logic also for the return on DL16 regardless of aircraft type.
If you are building elite status on DL, know that "V" is the complimentary First Class upgrade, but you accrue all miles/MQM's based on your coach fare basis.

Sometimes it helps to go in to the advanced search options and select a fare class. At times, certain fares are not available and if you have more time between now and your flight, it may give you more possibilities. If you are going to spend that kind of money between ATL-LAX, I would try very hard to book the 777 flight or the A332. Avoid the domestic 767's and domestic 757's if you are looking for an overall better hard product and more comfort for the 4 hours and 26 minutes.
On a side note, about 4 years ago, I booked two one way fares using this system on the 777. I looked for the cheapest F fare and found it for $396 one way......not too bad considering it was on an internationally configured 777 and it got me a ton more medallion miles and skymiles. I sure do miss $800 round trip fares on this route.
