World’s Longest Flights

(2 posts to follow: Footnotes and Notable Changes)

Regularly scheduled passenger flights (or proposed with start dates) flying 4700 nautical miles or greater, nonstop.

Looking for a specific flight within the list? Flights are arranged by nautical miles in descending order. Use the Great Circle Mapper http://gc.kls2.com/   setting the Path Distance menu to nautical miles to find your route’s distance.

Aircraft are listed with number of flights per week, unless otherwise noted.

Brackets [ ] indicate frequency and/or aircraft changes since last update. Example: 2529nm BOY-MAN Air Burkina 744x6[7]
…indicating the frequency changed (on this imaginary route) from last month’s 744x7 to 744x6 in these schedules.

Interesting perspective, Nick. Thanks for crunching the numbers! Although LHR is the world's busiest airport in international flights, given ULH and the upper range of long-haul, LAX clearly takes the prize.

With a lot less effort   I came up with the 13 routes which form what I call "triple plays": the routes currently the longest for both airports of the respective routes AND for the airline flying them. I'm not sure what significance this list has other than being a perhaps interesting bit of aviation trivia; they certainly are a varied lot:

Are you sure? I'm booked on AA168, NRT-JFK, on June 1 and the itinerary doesn't show any changes. Or is my June 1 flight the very last service after the May 31 outbound?

Umm... No!   That information is from weeks ago when the elimination of the route was announced (and discussed here on A-net). I haven't heard anything to amend the date. Can anyone provide more info?

The June OAG will likely shed some light. I've noticed airlines shift start and end dates about quite commonly.

On AA's website, it appears that your flight on June 1 is AA's last NRT-JFK flight before HND-JFK begins.

Also, here are 2 upcoming routes to add to the list:

(4747nm AMS-OAK Arkefly 763 - from 10June12)
This will be OAK's first appearance on the list.

(4847nm LAX-AMS Arkefly 763 - from 26June12) - eastbound only; westbound will have stop in LAS or OAK.
KLM currently serves AMS-LAX 74Mx7.

Thanks for that info, BNAOWB. I can understand the attraction of scheduling California flights when the European leisure-oriented carriers transition out of HKT, KBV and the like from their winter season flying. Seems like a good combination, California and Thailand being roughly the same distance from Europe (AMS-HKT is 5152 nm), therefore the same aircraft can perform either mission. Oakland is an interesting choice!

This will be OAK's first appearance on the list.

Oakland is an interesting choice!

Do any of you think that OAK instead of SFO is a bad choice for Arkefly? I would guess that many Dutch passengers would be satisfied with OAK as an alternative to SFO. Presumably many would also be visiting Napa, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, etc.?

Quoting yeogeo (Reply 12):
LAX
Regularly Scheduled Passenger Flights 4700nm or greater, May 16 Schedules

That is an interesting summary. On this California topic, it is amazing to think that the state of California has essentially the same number of weekly outbound nonstops over 4700nm (608) as continental Africa + South America + Australia combined (612)!

I shouldn't think there'd be many complaints. Although I'm sure most visitors will be focused on visiting and staying in San Francisco itself, transportation into the city can be made via BART, as with SFO, although OAK requires a shuttle bus to the station for now. I haven't been out to Oakland for many years, but can't imagine the airport transfer is any more expensive than the one from SFO; OAK is physically closer to the city than SFO is after all.

First, thank you. I tend to look for this thread every few months. So know you have some loyal readers.

You do realize that as the later build 787s (ln 60+, IIRC) come off the line, you'll soon have much more work to keep this list updated?

Quoting yeogeo (Reply 12):

Amazing looking at that list to see how the world has shrunk. Once upon a time very few widebodies could do LAX-Europe/Asia. Now only thanks to your update putting back in do many off the older 'long haul' routes even make the list! We can see what were once the major longhaul trunk routes are but just regular shuttle runs.

Interesting. To think that isn't even considered that long of a route.

I hope the expansion, plus the 787, increase that number tremendously.

Thank you again for the hard word.

It's true. (Speaking of "older" long hauls), I was pleased to see included within the just-added 300 nautical miles both LHR & NRT to LAX, but they only did just make it! I just can't quite get the significance that both airports are essentially equidistant from LAX (O.K., 4 nautical miles difference)... that must mean something

Well, there's two of us, don't forget (bnaowb is equally involved) and we've been building the list for nearly two years now so, yes, its a lot of work, but the work is shared and its been a long time coming to the point you see above.

Quoting yeogeo (Reply 20):
LHR

Here is a comparison by aircraft of the weekly outbound nonstops over 4700nm from #1 LAX (423) and # 2 LHR (358).

From LAX:
777 54.7%
747 24.4%
340 9.6%
380 6.5%
330 4.6%

From LHR:
747 35.7%
777 34.3%
340 14.8%
380 8.1%
330 6.9%

So, among weekly flights over 4700nm, LAX has a considerably higher percentage of 777 aircraft while the 747 remains in the top position at LHR.

And, a comparison by destination of the weekly outbound flights over 4700nm from LAX and LHR:

From LAX:
East Asia 48.8%
Europe 29.2%
Australia/Oceania 16.8%
Middle East 4.2%
South America .7%

From LHR:
East Asia 55.2%
North America 19.3%
Africa 14.5%
South America 8.9%
South Asia 2.0%

And, by total number of active routes over 4700nm:

From LAX: 30
From LHR: 18

which is the second segment of SQ67/68:

The only other 1-stop route on the list in which both segments are over 4700nm:
5048nm CDG-RUN Air Austral
4989nm RUN-SYD Air Austral
The same flight number (UU951/952) is used but there may be an aircraft change at RUN (??).
