Flights From The US To Tokyo, Japan

As most of you don't quite know (sarcasm) I am flying to Tokyo from Phoenix this summer for a few weeks.

I would like to know about flights to Tokyo based off of:
1) Price
2) least amount of stops
3) quality of service (i'm guessing US airlines are taken outta the questions)
4) NRT vs HND

Now, I am a silver medallion Sky Miles members, so DL flights would have the top choice from me, but if a different airline flying into Tokyo has a cheaper price than DL, I may take that flight.

Thanks, Zach

4) NRT vs HND

The transfer from HND to Tokyo (the areas hotels are in) is shorter than from NRT (usually, but depending on exact location of your hotel).
Fast trains to NRT are expensive.
Take a look into website http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2027.html for transfer options to/from NRT; explore the website in more depth for much more info on public travel and other topics.

In case you have ample time and intend to travel around in Japan anyhow, give flights into KIX a consideration. Often they are cheaper than flights into premium NRT and HND.
NGO would be a third option, but keep options to get away from NGO on ground transport in mind.

KE, a SkyTeam member, flies LAX-NRT non-stop daily. No connections or stopovers at ICN.

Don't walk away from almost 12K SkyMiles/MQM's on DL flights via LAX - hopefully you'll find a good fare. DL fares to HND are in some cases cheaper than NRT so check both......but the flight sked to HND is not as good on the A330. LAX-NRT flts op with the 777LR or ER.
KE is a SkyTeam partner that allows you to accrue miles and MQM's based on certain economy class fares purchased in certain fare classes......be careful of the fare and fare class which may exclude any accrual of miles. Look up the exception fare classes under SkyMiles, How to Earn Miles, and Partner Airlines. You could also fly China Airlines but only on specific DL marketed code-share flights to accrue miles.
With specific dates of travel you may find a much lower fare than DL or KE, but do factor in the benefit of continuing to accrue into your Silver status for future travel.
Good Luck with your plans. Let us know who you book.....and why.

$1104 on DL (PHX-LAX-HND and return) for 7/5 - 7/26. That is a ton cheaper than any other date I randomly checked. There is a 5hr layover in LAX on the outbound leg.

Contrary to what all the airlines thought when bidding for slots, the HND flights have turned out to have lower fares than NRT. Typically fares are lower to HND from LAX and SFO than NRT.

Also, it depends on timing, but LAX tends to be the cheapest gateway to Japan from the United States. With so much competition on the LAX-Tokyo route (KE, SQ, NH, JL, UA, DL, and AA all serving it nonstop), fares are often lower. It may make sense to buy a cheap ticket PHX-LAX to add on as sometimes the codeshares don't always show up in booking engines and fare rules are different.

In general, pick your dates and go to a multisearch website like Kayak. They will search all the airline's websites for you to save you time and redirect you to whatever site is cheapest.

As far as service goes, if you can, I would try for the SQ A380 if the fare is right!

The lowest fares from California to Japan are often on Delta. They have low market share in the HND/NRT - LAX/SFO market and compete on fares since they have limited feed. Just try to avoid the 767 on SFO-NRT as a DL 767 is probably the least comfortable way to cross the Pacific other than a rowboat.

What does that stand for?

What time does the LAX-HND route get into HND? The problem I heard is that it gets in too late, therefore I can't take the train to my hotel.

What airplane, and how full is it typically?

I don't mind the 5 hour layover. Get some good sleep/spotting in.

Hawaiian Airlines via HNL is a fun option. Gets you into Haneda, and you can earn DL miles (though not elite qualifying).

Pretty sure the LAX-HND arrival is at something like 430 am. I had friends that took it a couple of weeks ago and were able to take the train to their hotel just fine once done clearing immigration.

I'm already Silver Medallion, would that still count towards miles?

hm, tempting. For the first few days, last time, I was waking up at 4:30 AM until I shook off Jet Lag.

I don't know about the rest, but I can say I took the SQ A380 LAX - NRT about three weeks ago and I was thoroughly satisfied with it. Funny enough, it was the cheapest I found when I sought for the tickets (it was actually part of a Miami - Los Angeles - Tokyo ticket I bought on Expedia, MIA - LAX on AA and then SQ to NRT).

Of course, I had to check fares on my own airline, and in Economy, Air Canada can't even come close to the $1104 round trip fare quoted above. The best fare was around $2100.

However ....

How adventurous are you? Air Canada did have a limited amount of seats available at a fare of USD 3458, in Executive First, routed PHX-YYZ-NRT-YYZ-PHX!!! That is Executive Class on the A319, PHX-YYZ and return, and Executive First on the B777 YYZ-NRT and return. Its a long way around, but a cool itinerary ... and quite cant get my head around the fare. The normal Executive First fare is somewhere around $20,000, but this fare is advanced purchase, restricted. But heck a lie flat seat under a duvet sure is a nice way to travel!

It also requires an overnight stop at YYZ in both directions.

Where do you see a $20,000 round trip J fare on AC to NRT? That looks way too high. From YYZ, the current unrestricted J is about $14,000, and the restricted J fare about half that (looking at some random dates in June).

As you state, the fare is cheaper than NRT-AA MIA-ORD for a ORD fare ... just because!

I'll try this again. I should learn that the edit function on this website is virtually useless.

Any way.

If you pick a Tuesday to Tuesday in July, on the PHX-YYZ-NRT-YYZ-PHX routing, the fare is $3458 for restricted J, and $21055.55 for unrestricted J. These are taxes in, US Dollars, and with a US country of origin.

That's obviously just a paper fare. Would be much cheaper to buy separate tickets and connect at YVR rather than YYZ. The typical restricted J fare YVR-NRT seems to be around CA$3200.
