Murcia-Corvera Airport

I often visit the Murcia region in Spain, they are building a new airport there since 2007 that should have opened in 2011, then 2012 now it says 2013.

Does anyone have information on this airport, will it become a white elephant airport?

I loved that small military airport at San Javier, fast off loading and away to the beach. There are no more flights from Sweden to San Javier so I have to fly to Alicante, its a long trip from where I usually stay. I was hoping for the new airport to open and have connections to Sweden.

I know many British people go to San Javier and some Norwegian flights as well.

I would also be keen to get an update on the progress with Corvera as my parents live only 5 minutes from the current airport at San Javier ( MJV ) and that airport is obviously perfect for us. The existing facility also appears to be receiving regular upgrades to the terminal, (expanded check-in areas etc), so it will be interesting to see if Corvera ever actually opens.

Any information welcome!

It was on the Dutch news not long ago. About Spains economic situation, and how this country is wasting money basically ' everywhere ' . For example on this airport.
Just some major (or whoever decided about this) wanted an airport in his area and they request funds from the EU and government, which are easily given. The airport has been created but was not/is not at all attracting airlines.
And now, in 2012, Spain has nearly money left, and there is no good reason to open the airport soon (or at all).

This airport is one of many stupid mistakes made by some 'important feeling people' in local/regional governments in Spain.

Aside from eliminating the commercial flights at San Javier's military airbase, the new airport was to be developed to support the new Paramount theme park to be built nearby (planned to open in 2015). The overall intent being to develop a real tourist hotspot for the area. With the nation's current financial difficulties and no real certainty over the investment behind the park, I wonder how realistic any of this is in a short timeframe.

The idea was to have an airport that could operate 24/7 and receive large aircraft as well. It has a runway that could land a 747 or 380 I think. The military airport has time slots when no civilian flights are allowed to operate.

It was only like 25 km from San Javier iirc. If it never opens I hope for more flights to MJV. To drive 80+km from Alicante feels like a waste IMO.

Absolutely agree! Take a look in Ciudad Real, Castellón or Lérida airports ....it's disgusting, specially because it is wasted thanks to the Spanish tax payer

Just I hope public money squander may be equal to commit a criminal offense.
