WN's 'BIG SALE'

I saw that Southwest is launching a pretty big fall 2012 fare sale, with flights of 500 miles or less being $49 inclusive of taxes and fees. You can go from Manchester, NH to Baltimore and back for $98.

Wait. No you can't.

MHT-BWI isn't 'on the list.' In fact, Manchester only has one city that qualifies for the sale: Denver. That's it.

So, two questions:

1.) Is this fare sale an admission that the economy (and, by extension, demand for air travel) is heading south in the view of Southwest Airlines?

2.) And can you make the claim that if a city only has ONE destination as part of the sale, it is doing well enough not to need any 'stimulus?' In other words, the longer the list, the worse that city is doing?

Right. Which was why I asked Question #2: Is Boston faring poorly for Southwest? Do they need to stimulate traffic on that route? Nine flights for MHT and eight for BOS. Is that what this sale represents...an opportunity to 'help' underperforming routes? That may be an obviously rhetorical question (well...DUH!) but it helps me understand a bit better that our airport at MHT is doing pretty well for WN. At least I hope that's a reasonable conclusion.

Southwest does these several times a year - I wouldn't see it as any sign that WN is struggling in any particular market. They are pretty good at measuring and tweaking their markets to optimize things. (this is my own opinion)

WN has had this type of sale before but this is the first time PVD-BWI and MHT-BWI are not getting the $49 specials.

This Flyertalk thread lists some previous deals: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...35-65-95-125-winter-fare-sale.html

It looks the sale is less generous than before, and WN cherry picked routes for sales.

Before any city pair under 500 miles got the $49 (or lowest amount) deal. So PHL to CLE and CMH got $49 specials even though it was PHL-MDW-CLE and PHL-MDW-CMH which is a plane change and over 500 mile distance traveled. It was a great discount as PHL-MDW-CLE usually is ~$200 one-way WGA.

While MHT/PVD aren't getting much luv, look at IAD which never gets anything, where WN for the most part wants the DC region to use BWI.

The sale is being offered during a historically slow travel period. And the lowest fares aren't valid every day.

I have always chose PVD over BOS when my travels take me to New England. My sister-in-law lives in Weymouth, MA.

PVD is much smaller and easier to get in and out of, Additionally TSA screening is less of a hassle at PVD. Traffic in and out of Logan is horrendous most of the day and there are no tolls at PVD. I've never flown into or out of MHT so I can't compare the airport.

If you factor in accessorial trip cost such as a rental car the fares are the same if not less. When I looked at the weekly rental car rates at BOS compared to MHT and PVD I coughed. Well over $350 at BOS; $240-ish at MHT and a hundred and some change at PVD for the same size car.

Yes. They offer nothing to BOS as B6 has already covered BOS like white on rice with a better product. MHT however, is mostly a WN show, so stimulating traffic with low fares would likely just dilute the traffic, not grow it very much. DEN, however, has to be pretty rough to begin with, so perhaps low fares will fill the plane.

MHT-BWI isn't on the list, but when you search for that city pair the $49 fares come up.

1) WN seems to have really pared back its sales, so to me this is a welcome sale. It's for the slow fall season, and with the economy the way it is (so-so), they must be looking to stimulate demand. Not all that unusual, but it might indicate a softening demand for air travel.

2) That's generally the way I'd look at it. You can also throw in the fact that smaller stations like MHT don't have the intense competition of larger markets. So you won't necessarily need to drop your price to fill your airplane.
