Feb 2013 KLM To YUL, Safe To Get An MD11?

I want to book a round trip from Europe to America in Feb 2013, and I still have the MD11 on my bucket list so I would love to catch one on this trip. KLM has great fares into YUL, and the flights show as MD11 on both segments, but I'd hate to find it changed to an A330 later, especially since my final destination is nowhere near YUL and I'd make a big detour to accommodate this.

So if I book this now, how safe a bet is it to actually be on an MD11 in Fabruary 2011? Too early to tell for sure? Does anybody have insight into KLM's plans?

Thanks for your help!

I wouldn't count on it so long before. KLM is now mulling to retire the MD-11s earlier. If the economy is continuing to do badly or if the fuel price goes up north, they can park them on short notice. For a february 2013 trip I'd say check in november 2012 what KLMs plans are and then make a go/no go decision.

nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

The MD-11 is actually very dangerous to fly on......
Sorry, I am a but cynical but of course the MD-11 is safe to fly as it continues to fly with KL. As long as KL is profitable 9not AF) - or at least break evening - the last MD-11s will be in KLs fleet.

Do you mean from a safety perspective or from an enthusiasts bucket list perspective?

I think there is a misunderstanding here. I know KLM is a safe airline and so is their MD11.

What I meant to say is, if I book a flight now that shows an MD11 as equipment, is it safe to assume I will actually find an MD11 pull up to the gate 9 months from now, and not an A330.

I am confused, though I am assuming the poster is just a poor typist. It will be nearly impossible to be aboard an MD11 in February 2011. Maybe in Feb 2013...

Ah...ok!
No idea, KLM uses a lot of different capacity models which means that A33S, B77S, MD-11 and B747 can be deployed upon one flight (KL 641,671 e.g.) within one year.

Make your decision around Oct/Nov this year when KLM has published their Winter schedules...the MD-11's are never 100% guaranteed (for operational reasons): it could be replaced by 332's at short notice...but if you book a return ticket, one flight on a MD-11 is a good bet...
