UA SFO-HKG In F. Very Odd Food Choices

Main course:

1) pork chops
2) Shrimp
3) Mongolian Beef
4) Shrimp and pasta

How unfortunate not to have a chicken or a non shellfish or a vegetarian dish. As I am not strict about my level of kashrut, I don't usually order a special meal. And my experience has always been that there is a vegatrian option.

This wasn't a catering issue. It's what was on the menu.

The FA put together a rice and broccoli dish for me. It was bland, but I appreciated the effort.

Too bad not to have a F vegetarian option, which IMO should be standard practice worldwide on carriers serving an international clientele. Occasionally I'll order a VLML or AVML, but it usually isn't very good. I'm pescetarian and don't follow kashrut so I wouldn't have a problem with the shellfish options...I just don't eat strictly land walking creatures. I assume the "Mongolian" beef was not kosher.

I agree. If you have special dietary or religious requirements, it is up to you as the passenger, not the airline, to handle.

It's not so much an my dietary requirement. I just find it odd that in this day and age, with so many who don't eat meat or shellfish, that there was no other option.

But my main problem with ordering in advance is that my flight plans change so often, and sometimes I takes different flight. The special meal often can't get loaded.

I'm really having issues with this post because I used UA out of ORD to HKG not long a long a go and there was a vegetarian option in addition to extra special (religious, vegan, etc) meals. I'm Global Services at UA but I still always get them in advance what I require for meals if I don't pack meal to take on the plane. They are definitely trying a lot harder than the old UA.

I am surprises to see two options with the same protein. Also on domestic routes the choices are almost always pasta chicken or fish so it is weird to not see any of those as an option.

At old CO, there was almost always a pasta choice in the BF cabin. Since they mostly transitioned into the former CO international meal service, it may have been worth asking whether any such options were available in BusinessFirst.

Did Continental have international service before the merge, I forget?

They flew to some places like Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Hong Kong, Edinburgh, Tel Aviv, Quito, Beijing, Athens...

Are those domestic or outside the USA? I'm having trouble with my geography this evening.

I've noted that, too. But, the pasta dish could, on different flights, be with or without meat.

Sometimes even non-vegetarians don't feel like eating meat, and when that happens, an option is appreciated! I've been there.

Today, customers in the premium cabins seem to be the only ones able to pre-order a Veggie, Hindu, or Moslem meal.

I do appreciate the OP's concern about no non-meat meals being available on Asia flights.

For what it's worth, UA was a much more "global" airline for a much longer time than CO ever dreamed of being. CO didn't become truly global until the early to mid 2000's and only surpassed others in the late 2000's in terms on destinations. Of course, those international routes were saturated with 757's. So take your statement in context please.

Pasta is often the "vegetarian" selection. As shrimp by itself was an option, do you know if the shrimp was part of the pasta meal as loaded or did they have a separate shrimp load that they then used to add to the pasta?

And were any of the appetizers acceptable? Could they have put together a number of them to form an entree?

As a native New Yorker who used to see red every time they played that d*mn Pace commercial with the cowboys violently reacting to the discovery that their salsa was made in "NEEEEWWW YORK CEEETTAH???", I will stand second to no one in my hatred of all things Texan.

However, having visited Houston at least once a year the past 4 years, this is just dead, flat-out wrong. It's quickly becoming nearly as liberal and "alternative" friendly as Austin. Yes, they still love their BBQ and have more gigantic rear ends than any other place I've yet to visit, but there's also no shortage of vegetarian options, wine bars, organic food markets, and the like. I mean, heck, they even have a black, lesbian mayor. Even NYC can't claim that!

First class menu?

What happened to the lobster meal, Russian caviar and all the other gourmet dishes so common in the good old days when travelling in F? My favorite memory was on an SK DC8 1982 between CPH and NRT with a stop in Moscow. I ordered the tenderloin and the flight attendant dressed in full Chef attire came to my seat with a big plate containing 3 whole tenderloins, well done, medium and medium rare. He would then cut the slices of my choice.

I've flown 214,000 in the last year -- but only domestic and Canada (I drive to Mexico--thank you). Never been trans-Pacific or Hawaii, never hankered too, and never missed it.

I say -- put the friggin *pork chops* on SFO-to-east coast (BOS, JFK, EWR, PHL, BWI, IAD (and soon DCA) which all fit the "over 2300 miles" profile for premium domestic catering.

As a meat-eating Catholic boy (pork, chicken, beef -- even lamb on some AC flights -- and even horse-meat if it's tasty -- less for you prigs means more for me.

For all I could care, turn all those trans-Pacific flights into cos-cos and steamed broccoli only.

YES! I remember how SAS on its B747 flights in the 70's had the male F/As dress that way with tall white chef hats. It was amusing, probably embarrassing for the F/As, and a lot of fun.

This particular menu looks like it was inspired by Denny's.

But CO did begin longhaul international service (to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and American Samoa) in 1979, 4 years before UA launched their first transpacific routes SEA/PDX-NRT and SEA-HKG in 1983. Until those services began, UA's only international destinations were YVR and YYZ (and limited service in the early '80s to Cancun and Cozumel in Mexico.)
