Hey Folks:

Yesterday my mom flew to CCS on AA 903. The plane departed at 4:40 PM (35 min delayed). After being on the air for almost an hour and a half the plane turned back to MIA. I tracked it down yesterday and it remained looping in circles over the everglades (dumping fuel I guess). The plane landed in MIA aprox at 6:30 and it took off back to CCS at 8:12 PM. I talked to my mom today as I couldn't either comunicate with her yesterday and the AA call center really doesn't give any information at all, and she told me that there was an issue on one of the main doors of the plane and the noise was horrible. One thing I noticed is that the plane flew back to MIA at 8000 Feet. Do any of you guys have more detailed info on what happened? Im just curious of the real issue. The other thing that kept my attention is that why if it was almost half way they returned back to MIA? If it was a real emergency why just not land in a close by airport i.e NAS, SDQ, PUJ? I know that AA maintenance is here in MIA, but given the fact it was an "emergency" should the procedure be land wherever you can?

Cheers

Tavo

If there were an issue, MIA has better protection for the passenger and possibly a swap of aircraft (if available). The Dispatcher and MX Control would talk about the issue, and confer on where the best suitable place to land would be.

Landing at an International destination would be a big hassle not only for the passegers, but also the airline.

Not completely sure what the maintenance issue was, but it wasn't that terribly long to resolve, although certainly not a great experience for the passengers.    Anyway, after he came back he was boarded up and ready to depart an hour and a half later; same aircraft. Then there was some kind of pushback issue, ground equipment or something.   He got into CCS at 2320 local.

..everything works out in the end.

Well as it was Miami apparently AA didn't managed so well. They took everybody out of the plane with no food vouchers or at least some compensation or anything. They didn't even apologized. I think AA needs to improve their customer service on emergencies like this one. On a side note the call center was not so helpful with me when I asked them what was going on.

Yes I followed the flight path afterwards and noticed the arrival time. Apparently there was something lose on the front door. According to my mom the captain didn't talk too much about it...just that they were going back to MIA.

Thanks and Cheers

You're not going to get meal vouchers on such a relatively short delay. And it's probably not a good idea anyway, especially if the maintenance folks assessment is that the fix won't take long. The thing you have to understand is this: by the time you give meal vouchers to 150+ passengers......... give them time to go eat.......... come back to the aircraft........... round up the stragglers who can't tell time.........board again, and depart....that would have taken probably twice the hour and a half that they spent on the ground, if not more. And, just guessing, but the crew may have been approaching going illegal for that trip, which would have meant either cancelling the flight completely or RON (postponing it to the next day).

I doubt no apology was offered, though, at least on the ground. Those canned announcements can be heard over and over in the gate areas in both english and spanish.

..everything works out in the end.
