Day Trips From HAM

I will be arriving in HAM on Friday, 12 October to attend an event that starts on the 14th. I'm looking for interesting day trip options on Saturday the 13th, and hope somebody on a.net can give some good ideas. These are a few of the things I have been considering:

1. Prague. Prague has been on my bucket list for a very long time. OK has non-stops HAM-PRG late Friday and early Saturday, but there is no return available until late Sunday, which doesn't work at all. The option would be to take OK there, and get a connecting return with another airline. I've only looked at KL and AF, but the latest PRG-HAM connection leave at 15:35, and I would prefer to stay a little longer, especially if I go down that morning on the OK flight that arrives at 10:40.

2. Riga. I've wanted to go there ever since some friends of mine lived there for a while several years back. The problems though are similar to PRG. Air Baltic operates HAM-RIX late on Friday or mid-day on Saturday, but there is no return until late Sunday, which doesn't work.

3. Berlin. This is a more realistic option. There is a busy schedule of ICE trains throughout the day, and plenty of interesting things to see. I've never been to Berlin before. What would you all reccommend as a 1-day tourist itinerary in Berlin?

4. Lubeck. Closer to Hamburg, easily accessible by train. I've heard that it is a nice place to visit, but don't know much about it.

I'm visiting Denmark after finishing my business in HAM, and returning home via CPH, or else I might consider CPH as a day trip. I have a particular interest in Eastern Europe and places with Cold War history, but I am open to consider any interesting suggestion that the community might have. I could just spend the day in HAM, but I will be there for several days for business and should have some time to see the city on the other days.

Berlin surely is an option.
You can either spend the day exploring the city (center area) or, being an A.netter, you could spend some time spotting at TXL before is closes some time in 2013.

OTOH, with your interest in Eastern Europe, what about the following:

out: Friday HAM - WAW 1945-2115h
returning Saturday WAW - HAM 1725 - 1900h
Flights are on a LOT E170.

That being said, "mid October" is a hit or miss weather-wise, be in in northern Germany, or any other place north of the Alps.

Daytrips - or with 1 night at destination - should also be possible to make to PMI, but it will be school holidays by then, so fares might be uninterestingly high.

A train ride to Bremen could be an option. The city still has an interesting old quarter left, dubbed "Schnoor" located near the river Weser. All in all, life is a bit more relaxed in Bremen compared to Hamburg. And just outside Bremen's main station there is a highly respected ethnological museum, though I can't recall if exhibits are well described in English language.

Other cities around with older city centers (something that is rare to find in Germany due to extensive bombing during World War II ) )to pay a visit to (and easily reachable by train) would be Stade and Lüneburg.
Of these two, Lüneburg is famous for its many bars etc., (due to many students in the city), so it might even be an option to consider one night within the business week.

Welcome to my hometown!

I think Hamburg is as such a beautiful and outstanding city- worth to spend little more time exploring this fascinating town.

If you are looking just to score a new airline and airport, you might be interested in visiting Bern with SkyWork Airlines (on the more expensive side) or just a quick round-trip on AirBerlin/Lufthansa to Munich.

Berlin is very nice, but too short - anyway, places for interests are for you:
DDR Museum: http://www.ddr-museum.de/en/
Berlin-Hohenschönhausen: http://en.stiftung-hsh.de/
and for sure: http://www.mauermuseum.de/

That's an attractive option. I'll definitely look into it. The question will be having enough time to make the outbound flight after arriving into HAM earlier Friday.

Bremen could be an option.

I hadn't really considered Bremen except as an alternative airport for HAM. I'll definitely read up on it.

I had a few years of German in school. Although I've forgotten much of it, I was in Germany last year and found that I still can read it pretty well and understand a lot of spoken German. So I hope that I would be able to navigate the museum successfully.

Just about any airline/airport would probably be new in my log, as I haven't travelled extensively in Europe. My flight log currently has 8 European airports. This trip will increase it to 11.

Thanks for the links!

I am working for Hamburg Airport - connections are very easy and simple... Only question is, when will you arrive in HAM? On which carrier?

I have heard very nice things about Hannover, though I have never visited. You can go on an ICE from HAM for 19€ one way. It's only about an hour each way.

There will be a rather broad opposition in Germany to this statement.
While there are a few nice spots to visit in Hannover, I certainly would not choose this destination as the single daytrip from Hamburg.
And this statement comes from one who is local to the Hannover-area and dislikes the city of Hamburg !

I was talking to a friend of mine from near Augsburg a few weeks ago, and she visited and enjoyed it :?

There are also some very flashy magazins in the trains of the ÖBB promoting Hannover as a tourist destination...

While I am aware that we are getting a bit off-topic here but still I would interested to see/read what they promote about Hannover.

In terms of old architecture the bombing raids hardly left anything apart from the Old and the New Town Council, and the facade of the central station.
The baroque gardens at Herrenhausen would make it onto a really short list of must-see.

The local zoo may be respected but I don't think that it makes people travel here specifically (unless they are zoo-affectionados like a colleague of mine).

Conventions and fairs abound, but will appeal to business people only.

There is a museum with numerous aircraft on display German Wikipedia.

Many other attractions like the cities of Celle or Hamelin [Hameln] are located within 1 hours driving time (or less) around Hannover, but they are not Hannover. A bit further away is old mondain spa Bad Pyrmont.
