Your Best Flying Day Trip?

Hello,

Just thought I'd ask you guys who go on flying day trips sometimes what your best one was if you have one. A couple of years ago I became kinda obsessed with flying day trips going twice a week, sometimes even 4 times. The best were days to Bratislava with Ryanair out of Stansted. I loved the city. Hardly any tourists. Very old and picturesque. Cool trams. I didn't think I would really like the city looking at the website but I loved it. There were many many cities I liked but that was the best.

Anyway and thoughts very welcome.

My best day trip was simply motoring around east Texas in a C140 years ago, landing a a number of small airports and walking around the ramps while talking to the locals then stopping in Woodville, Texas (northeast of Houston) for an early dinner at the Pickett House. What a fun day fall day with about 5 hours on the Hobbs meter.

That sounds very cool. Guys who enjoy flying really do seem to have a blast. I remember when I was taking flying lessons a few years ago here in the UK whern there was the ash cloud problem from Iceland. All the London airports were closed for commercial traffic so opened their airspace to all the little VFR Cessnas and Pipers and anyone. Me and my instructor went for a flight over Gatwick. It was very cool even though I was never very happy in the air. I heard of one guy who went to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and City I think all in one flight in a Cessna. There were some cool sights but it was a little eerie!

I did a lot of daytrips in the past few years, but the coolest was by far in July 2009. I flew on a DC-3 from AMS to CBG, to attend the Duxford Flying Legends airshow at Duxford Airport (QFO). At the airport I flew on a DeHavilland DH-89, and after the airshow I flew back on the DC-3 to AMS. Definitely my best daytrip, and in fact one of the best days of my life!

I always like doing day trips on the Qantas 747 from Brisbane to Sydney (in business class, and up until the recent reconfig was able to use the first class cabin), spend the day ralaxing in the Qantas Club drinking wine and plane spotting, then fly back home to Brisbane lol.

But the biggest day trip was last year, flew Brisbane to Hong Kong, 08hrs50min flying time, departed at 0055am. Got into Hong Kong for a short work seminar for an hour that morning, spent the afternoon enjoying kowloon, then watched the evening laser show over the city, then jumped on the plane that night for the flight back. Business class both ways too so thats always great   Been to Hong Kong many times prior to that (usually overnight though..) but was just fun to do it for a day trip

My best ever day trip was years ago when I was 16. Myself and a mate flew VS LGW-BOS for the day and we were mad but enjoyed it. Our parents later found out when they checked our passports to see if they were in date and we were grounded lol...still gets a few laughs when our Families chat about it now.

Probably my fave daytrips where i've actually been somewhere though are as follows;

LGW-TLS ... easyJet A319s... to visit A380 factory

LHR-JFK ... British Airways B747-400s ... a LONG day, but a good day!

LHR-DUB-CFN ... bmi A321s & Aer Arann ATR42s ... afternoon on the Donegal beach  

LTN-GIB ... Monarch A320s ... done this several times now and just love Gibraltar!

LGW-MAN ... British Airways (Ryanair) B737-800s (during BA strike) ... to see Brentford win at Stockport!



Next Up: Back to the US - Charlotte & Kansas City

Yes the LTL-GIB-LTN enthusiast's trip was excellent.

I did a couple of day trips in the Philippines a few years ago, which were great. ZAM-JOL-ZAM on an Asian Spirit YS-11, with in flight cockpit visit and the added 'danger' of the regions and multiple bomb threats against the flight. Then a few days later MPH-MNL-MPH, out on an Asian Spirit 146-100 (departing from the shortest runway the type has ever used) and the jump-seat for landing in MNL. Then I wangled airside access for photography at MNL before returning on a SEAIR Do-328, with open cockpit access.

Plus loads of flights for fun, just picking a cheap/fun day routing around Europe and flying for the hell of it.

Went to LA last month for one night, mostly to see German electronic music pioneers Tangerine Dream in concert at the Nokia Theatre. Was a good effort to stay awake for the whole three hour set* despite the crushing jet lag. Flew American on a staff ticket, F class to JFK (777-200ER), F class to LAX (767-200ER), Y class back to JFK (767-200ER) and finally J class to MAN (757-200). Ended up in MAN so I could attend the collectors / memorabilia convention in the Concorde hangar, although I checked into an airport hotel to spend the morning sleeping first! Finally after buying a few items and having a chat with the Airliner World / Key Publications team on their stand, I flew home to LHR on British Midland ERJ - will miss BD when the last trace of their existence is gone.

Most ambitious was a daytrip in Nov 2010 from London to Sydney for a meeting and a concert - out Thu night on BA 15 (777-200ER) arr Sat morning, slept all day, meeting in the evening + concert, slept all night (surprisingly), then Sun paid a surprise visit on my Nana (who lives in Australia, ta da), then bought a suitcase, filled it with Aussie snacks (chicken flavoured Twisties and Burger Rings basically), then boarded late afternoon BA 10 (747-400) and flew overnight back to London, arr early Monday morning. One reason I fancied it was cos I had this gigantic book about the history of North Korea and could never make much headway, but knew I could do the lot in 44 hours of flying, and lo, managed 400 pages on the way out and the other 400 pages on the way home. Success!

* and if you know their music, you will agree it's not all exactly high energy; in fact often classified as "New Age" and intended specifically to relax the listener!

Day trips are what I miss about not working in the airline industry anymore. I used to would take day trips to Boston or Washington D.C. and visit museums and historic sites. Boston is so chock full of history and you have some historical places that are surrounded by modern buildings on all sides.

I did a few ATL-PDX-ATL runs on Delta simply so I could fly on an MD-11 and sit up in BusinessElite. This was back when DL used PDX as their Asian gateway. Get off the plane in Portland and roam around the airport for a hour or so and get on the return flight to ATL and it was about 12 hours between leaving ATL and getting back there.

In all of my non-rev trips, I flew into LGA and JFK but never ventured into NYC. One day trip that I really enjoyed was to New Orleans with one of my friends from work. New Orleans on a Tuesday morning/afternoon in April is pretty quiet and that was the right way to be introduced to the town. I've always meant to go back, but just haven't done so.

AKL-HKG-AKL - done twice. Arrived around 6am, departed around 6pm. I just went up for a day out. By the time I wandered around, did some shopping and headed back for some plane spotting, I was refreshed and ready to face the monotony and drudgery of everyday life..

I'm based in the central U.S., and my favorite day trips are to:

SFO

Take the first flight to San Francisco, which, due to a two time-zone difference, gets there mid-morning. Spend the day hanging out, doing whatever -- an exhibit, a rare film, or just traipsing around on S.F.'s loverly streets with their often surreal and beautiful views. Then take a red-eye home, departing around midnight and getting to my city around daybreak.

NYC

Similar to S.F. -- a red-eye to NY arrives around daybreak. Alternatively the first morning flight to NY from my city gets there around noon. Spend the day in Manhattan, then take the last flight home, which leaves at 7 or 8pm and gets here by midnight.

DAY TRIPS ROCK !!

I've done two flying day-trips, both with the flying being the main purpose.

April 2012:
MKE-ATL-SFO-DTW-MKE on DL. This was a trip out to the west coast (for the first time) and back all done in a 22 hour period. I happened to stumble upon it. everything lined up perfectly, and it offered the opportunity to try out 4 new aircraft types in a row!

August 2008:
MSN-DTW-CMH-DTW-MSN: Sort of came about as something I had always wanted to do and had the opportunity after I graduated High School and before college started. Got a chance to fly 3 legs on DC-9s and Northwest while they were both still around, including a 1967 built DC-9-30. Living 80km from CRL, cheap daytrips with Ryanair are a no-brainer. I went to DUB on several occasions when they had 2 daily flights, too bad it can't be done anymore. Last year I went to BGY, rented a car for the day to explore the countryside, and this year I made a daytrip to MAN, loved it so much that I will surely book another one soon

My first nonrev trip was a day trip to CVG and then Avis to the AF Museum at Wright-Pat, returning to LGA that evening.

My most recent was arriving LHR at 7am, going to the Mall, seeing the happy couple on the balcony, seeing the flypast, heading back to LHR to catch the 5pm back to JFK.

Wow! Over the years I did a lot of day trips.
My first one was in August of 1972 on PSA Stockton-SFO: morning flight to San Francisco, a day in the city and a late afternoon flight back.
For about 5 years if flew OAK-PDX on AS for a day meeting. Morning in and evening out.
Later on I flew TUS-PDX for a midday meeting. Usually took US TUS-PHX-PDX usually without change of plane on Mesa and a WN return PDX-LAS-TUS.
Once I did TUS-DEN-SMF drive to Stockton to have lunch with my parents and returned SMF-LAX-TUS on UA.

Besides for GA flying I have only done one "real" day trip and one trip where I was in a place for less than 24 hours but I did spend the night in a hotel.
That one was DCA-ATL-TLH-ATL-DCA. It was a good trip got into TLH at 9pm left TLH at 3:30pm but as I said I spend the night in the hotel. I enjoyed seeing TLH and after touring a University there I spent the rest oft he day walking around the area seeing the sites of the state capital and going to a Florida History museum which was pretty cool.

My real day trip was on the second day Jet Blue started service to DCA. Me and friend got tickets for Jet Blue $36 round trip left DCA around 9am or so got into BOS around 10am we took a cab into downtown and just enjoyed the area, had some lunch, walked all over the city. Went back to BOS around 4pm and was back in DCA by 6pm.

I'm amazed by the number of like minded people we have here.....normally I get a look of amazement when I say I'm off to x for the day.

It started off of a means to get a QF FF bonus last year, a few day trips on BA just to give me a few extra miles I needed.

It's turned into a bit of an addiction....

still to come FRA and HAM on LH, AMS again on BA, ORY on BA, ZRH on LX and BRU on SN before Christmas. Don't even ask me to list the one's I'm planning for next year inbetween my long haul trips!

Rome is a well recommended for a day, leave LHR at 7am get into Rome city by 10:30/11am, back on a flight at 9pm..last time I went I had the unexpected pleasure of the Alitalia retrojet coming back

Stockholm and Copenhagen are both nice cities too, a bit expensive but well worth a visit. Unless you know the city or have a specific thing to do or see, I get one of those hop-on hop off bus tours, you get to see the whole city, and get off where you want, if you want to and plan your day around seeing the sights etc before heading back.

A couple of years ago I did the LHR-CDG-LHR trip on AF, just to try the A380.

Another odd trip which I suppose just about meets a day trip was Brisbane to Longreach and back. Admittingly an overnight stop, but I arrived about midday just time to drop my case of at the motel across the road before heading back to the Qantas Founders Museum for the 707 and 747 tour, back the next morning for the bits of the museum I missed the day before, before catching the mid afternoon flight back to Brisbane. (Actually left a 8pm after a birdstrike and a replacement plane from BNE 2 hours away) Despite being 10000 miles from home, 600 miles from the nearest major city, I managed to bump into someone who lives 2 miles away from me in the UK...very strange! I would recommend a trip to the Qantas Museum in Longreach to anyone down in that way, if like me you're travelling all that way, whats another 2 hour flight to go and see it.

I did joke the other day I was going to Sydney for some shopping. Which taking a late night flight from LHR on Monday with QF, arrives SYD early Wednesday AM, a day in Sydney before catching the early evening flight back, arriving back in LHR Thursday early AM ....and only 2 days off work! (Not sure I would be in any fit state to come to work on the Thursday mind you!) Maybe when I've got enough points on my QF FF account perhaps!

Not quite the same category as the trips above, but when in Egypt, the easiest way of visiting the Abu Simbel temples is by air as a daytrip, leaving very early to catch the sunrise and back by lunchtime. This was back in April 2010, ASW to ABS and back on a Air Memphis DC9-31 SU-PBO which had seen better days!
