I absolutely agree. I don't want to hijack this thread and make this AVOD vs. WiFi, but......
I do the leg between EWR-HKG 3 or 4 times a month, so I'm on ULH flights way more than I would like to be. I'm in BusinessFirst most of the time, so I would MUCH rather have WiFi than the AVOD. I sit on the plane typically and cook through my e-mails. I use the AVOD for the sole purpose of the flight map. Now, I would NOT be able to give up that flight map.
That being said, the few times I fly Economy, I would NEVER fly on an aircraft that didn't have AVOD. Planes already have too many annoying children on them, could you imagine just a handful of kids under 12 who didn't have the movies? They already get unrulely, and thats with as maby movies as they can watch!!
Yes, it's very important, if nothing else to act as a pacified for kids.

I think it is. It would make or break my flying a certain carrier for sure!
Here are a few of my positions with relation to AVOD:
Whilst I know people on this site simply say look out a window; I find that interesting for 15mins max, and generally I prefer flying at night so there isn't too much to see so that limits that form of entertainment.
Read a book; I don't like disturbing my co travellers at night with the reading-light and spend so much time at uni reading I really am rarely in the mood to read just for pleasure anymore these days.
Wifi is better; at 23 I confess it's shameful but I am an utter technophobe, couldn't download a movie or anything to save myself, beside what am I going to be doing on the internet that will occupy me for 16hrs from MEL-LAX? or worse MEL-DOH-LHR....
Talk to the person next to you - fair call, but I always seem stuck next to a crazy or nutter lol.
I find between work and study I am really really busy and don't watch any TV and rarely get to see any movies, for me a flight is a nice opportunity to sit back and do nothing for a few hours but relax watch some TV/Movies with a glass of wine.
I would not even consider flying long-haul without a PTV, but thats just me. The question is though how many people agree with me? Obviously a few otherwise airlines wouldn't spend so much on fitting heavy bulky IFE.

It is extremely important to me. I hope that improvements in Technology will help airlines realize the benefits without as many costs. Obviously the cost of the content will always exist, but considering how light an Ipad is, and how heavy the average AVOD system is on a plane, there is room for improvement. I do not own a tablet, and I don't keep movies on my phone, nor do I take expensive electronics with me to other countries, so if the plane doesn't offer in seat entertainment, I'll be flying a different airline. I can't sleep on a plane, and I'm not going to stair at the head of the passenger in front of me for 15 hours.
Out of curiosity...Airlines are increasingly offering plugs on planes, which will eventually allow you to use your own IFE, phone, etc, but most people I talk to don't know that it is offered. If it becomes common knowledge and everyone on board starts charging their laptops, could that burn more fuel than is spent on the weight of AVOD systems?

Even little kids can easily be pacified through WiFi and a power slot.
If you can afford a longhaul flight (even in economy), you can probably afford at least one electronic gizmo to keep yourself busy...

It would be far cheaper (thanks to reduced weight) for airlines to allow flight map to be streamed onto your portable device... Through WiFi of course

You all forget that, whilst wifi might be good, it doesn't have "airshow"! I didn't realise how much I loved airshow until my recent AC 777 flight where it didn't work / wasn't turned on
