Best Routes For Trips Across The Globe

Hello folks!!

I wanted plan a trip across the world from Anchorage Alaska. I wrote down some routes going East to SEA-ORD-JFK-CDG-JNB-SYD-HKG-NRT-HNL-ANC. I really want to fly the 787 so that's why I wrote the HKG-NRT. I only plan on staying 1 day per stop. Any ideas??

I would assume you'd want to accrue miles into a specific airline/alliance frequent flyer program so I would recommend using the websites of each alliance to obtain schedules and fares for a Round-The-World routing. Your suggested routing looks like a SkyTeam routing until you get to JNB so I would research your options further. Don't waste the opportunity to earn and accrue miles and possible status due to the distance you will be flying.
I helped a friend build his RTW trip earlier this year. We liked the oneworld website and he wanted to continue his use of AA Advantage. We live in FL and because he wanted to hit certain continents we found the flight schedules, routings and fare to be the best using oneworld. He specifically wanted to fly on a A380 which he got to do on QF.
He too spent no more than 2 nights at any one city due to flight schedules and length of his total journey time. Although his trip was not disrupted with delays, missed connections or logistics problems once he landed, he did encounter one 6 hour delay, and one very turbulent ride somewhere in Asia that resulted in 2 hours of white knuckle flying. Once back home, it took him a week to get back to some sense of normal......jetlag/sleeping pattern/eating/time zone and body clock issues and general fatigue.
He enjoyed "seeing" the places he landed, but some recollections are fuzzy due to the quick nature of his stopovers. He definitely wants to re-visit Buenos Aires, Singapore and Sydney where he spent just a quick 2 night stay in each city, often arriving late at night and having only a partial day to sightsee or look around.
We used the oneworld RTW link to book him MCO-MIA-EZE-MAD-LHR-SIN-NRT-HKG-SYD-LAX-JFK-MCO.
You have infinite possibilities of routings and country choices. Several airlines offer RTW routings/bookings using their websites - such as QF, BA and NZ - and connect to their gateway cities from ANC by buying separate tickets if necessary. It is really fun to use these various booking engines to plot your itinerary. All will quote fares in Economy and Business classes if you use specifc dates for your travel.

Having done 2 RTW trips this year (+ my mom who has done 1 per year for as long as I can remember) I would recommend two things:

(1) Choose an alliance. You can very easily get to Silver status (and a free rountrip within North America) even if your mileage balance at the start of the trip is 0.

(2) Look into travel agent options. We always use Flight Center (www.flightcenter.com) because they seem to get the scoop on some very attractive fares. Both of mine this year (on OW as a QFFF) have worked out $600-800 cheaper than on the aforementioned OneWorld website. It's a good website (as is the Star Alliance one - my mom is UA 1K so she goes *A) but I generally use them to plan the route and then take it to a travel consultant to see if they can beat it - which in my experience they have done in 90% of circumstances.
