Hello all,
I want to book a flight from Germany to the USA and have narrowed down my options to SQ A388 FRA-JFK-FRA and AF CDG-IAD;JFK-CDG. The plan is to sit on the upperdeck.
I know that AF offers this and doesn't charge extra. However, they let you select their seat at the time of booking so I would assume that by now all of the upperdeck will be booked out.
Singapore Airlines has two versions of the A388 - one with, one without economy sitting upstairs. Which one is being used on the SIN-FRA-JFK-FRA-SIN run? Also, it's been a while since I last booked SQ and I don't remember whether they let you select seats. Also, do they charge a premium for the upperdeck?

SQ are using Layout one on FRA-JFK-FRA which does have the 88 Y seats at the back of the upper deck.
I've flown this layout on SIN-NRT and you don't have to pay any premium to be seated there.
You can also request your seats after booking to ensure you get a seat up there

I just flew on SQ on JFK-FRA and back, they use the old config. A388 with the upper deck Y cabin (71-83) on all of their JFK flights. Yes, SQ does allow you to pre-select your seats online during booking but make sure you do it months in advance because they run out fast. We booked our ticket on the first week of January 2012 for travel on the first week of August, and my mom and I got the last pair of seats on the upperdeck. (They might have blocked some seats, so if there are no available seats, be early at the airport. I know they've opened up some seats a few days before departure on my SIN-FRA-JFK flight a week ago) Also, there's no extra charge unless you want an exit row seat (no window) for additional 50USD. I highly recommend SQ's A380, especially on the upperdeck!

Thanks to both of you. It is quite unfortunate to hear that SQ offers free selection of seats. I tend to book my flights less a few days in advance and have grown quite fond of airlines that make you wait until online check-in opens. Unfortunately, neither SQ nor AF do this and neither let's you check seat availability before the booking (like UA for example).
At least I know now that my chances of riding the upperdeck are about the same on both flights (approaching zero) but that at least in theory I could make it. I shall book the SQ then and show up at the airport extra early.

I recently flew SIN-FRA on the A380, sat in the upper deck. In fact, when I booked, the only set of two seats next to each other and next to a window available were on the upper deck!!! Which, was exactly what I wanted!
