I am travelling with Alitalia for the first time this coming week. Does anyone know what level of refreshment I can expect on lunch time flights on the Heathrow/Rome and Milan/Heathrow routes?
Given the level of intra-European catering you get on most airlines these days I am probably wildly optimistic in thinking we might get lunch - maybe I should just buy a sandwich at the airport. Would be good to know if anyone has any insight.
I will be doing a couple of domestic flights too but have no expectations beyond a cup of coffee that I have to pay for.

I would recommend a toasted sandwich at Costa or whichever coffee place it was in T4 (they're all much the same), the seating area looks out over the runway....don't forget a pot of tea too.....a pot lasts longer than a cup of coffee!
AZ will give you a coffee/tea/soft drinks and a choice of sweet biscuits or savory biscuits, I've flown the first flight to Rome twice this year, and the last flight of the day back and you get much the same in both directions.
In theory these would be a breakfast / evening meal flights, and this is what you get, so I would be surprised if the lunchtime flight was any different to be honest.
I quite like Alitalia actually, so hopefully you'll have some nice flights. My last flight from Rome-LHR was the Retrojet so that was a nice bonus! Enjoy your trip

Just in case you were intrested:
LHR - FCO: glass of wine and savoury biscuit [A321]
FCO-NAP - absolutely nothing! [A320 ]
NAP-LIN - water or coffee [E190]
LIN-LHR glass of wine and savoury biscuit. [A320].
I saw the retrojet mentioned by n729pa at FCO and our A320 from FCO to NAP was also one of their special colour schemes [EI-DSA] - has a pale grey colour scheme and carries the titles "Muoviamo chi muove l'Italia". There is a nice picture of it at http://www.flickr.com/photos/caribb/5918668040/
I think it is or was an AirOne machine as on the side wall of the seats there were 'medalions' featuring the Heron Logo.

Funny coincidence....because I saw that one at FCO when I arrived that day.

FCO-MAD and return had free drinks with a small biscuit.
At least it was free...
The 747 will always be the TRUE queen of the skies!
Domestics get a glass of water, and if you're lucky tea/coffee as well.
LHR-Italy gets a choice of sweet or salty biscuits + a drink or two (wine/beer/soft drinks/tea/coffee/water/juice)
