Business Class On AMS-BKK: KL Or CI?

I am likely to spend 1 week after easter 2013 in BKK and around.

As I am getting a bit weary of LH Group and of their new mileage accrual rates in Business Class (and those of TK, sadly), and given that I will be Flying Blue Gold at the end of this yr(besides my just-recoveredM&M Senator status), I'd like to give a go to Skyteam..

AF is unfortunetaly a no-choice, in view of their poor frequency since last year in BKK and their extortionate Business fares on that destination, so from LUX, it just leaves KL+KL or KL+CI via AMS.

KL has slightly better schedules than CI, but which of the 2 has the best product in Business class on that route?

KL 77W have a similar Business Class cabin to that of AF (NEV-3), while CI also has angled lie-flat seats, albeit different ones.

Can anyone help?

I would rather prefer CI, but as I learned from this excellent TR: Double Letdown To BKK & TPE: UL A330/A340, CI 744 (by PlaneHunter Sep 24 2012 in Trip Reports) CI seems to operate sometimes still the B744 in the old configuration on the AMS-BKK-TPE route- despite their web-page promising only re-configured a/c's!
But, I don't know for sure, as the route is sold in J and Y only, with some luck you might get a F seat with J service- IF an old configured B744 is used...

BTW. if you are NOT alliance focused, you may try SRI LANAKAN special 1400€ fare from FRA via CMB; I think this is a pretty good deal for the month of April!

There's also EVA Air that flies AMS-BKK with their gorgeous 77W. Might be an interesting option!

Nothing's worse then flying the same registration twice, except flying it 4 times..

I tend to be alliance focused, but I have also noticed the UL bargain fares, both from FRA and CDG...
After all, UL is to join OW, next year, but when?

I also have no idea of the lounges which theyr use at CDG/FRA and BKK, and wouldn't want to start a night flight without a good shower beforehand.

BR is on my Agenda 2014. Flw fly CDG-TPE-CGK/DPS.

By then, BR will have joined Star Alliance, their Business class fares will accrue 200% at M&M, and their new intercontinental Business class (very interesting seating layout) will have been deployed in full.

I may also consider WY from CDG/FRA to BKK via MCT, but in that case, I will secure mw FB Gold status through 30 cheap yet qualifying flights in Europe. Not always easy to choose what to do. In any event, AF is a no-choice, sadly.

Who knows, EY may join Skyteam this winter

First off, be aware that KL will not award FlyingBlue miles on CI for the AMS-BKK route. It is the only route in the CI system that KL will not give you miles for (so much for SkyTeam cooperation!).

Secondly, as already mentioned, there are some trip reports which indicate that CI still uses old, non-refurbished, and rather beat-up 744s on this route. KLM's business class won't be winning any awards anytime soon, but at least you know it will be a relatively new plane and reasonable seats (the 777-300 is used on this route which has slightly better WBC seats than the rest of the fleet).

Given the uncertainty around the CI plane that will be used and the fact that you wouldn't get any miles, I'd go with KLM. Note that you can book your flight at www.airfrance.ie and avoid the booking fees and credit card fees that you find on klm.nl. In fact, I recently bought the same route in business class for almost EUR 800 cheaper there than KLM was offering on their own site in the Netherlands!

I have heard of this blackout, and even remember seeing it on FB webpages on partner airlines.

But it seems it has gone, on the webpage at least.

Thanks, I am quite curious at the difference between the old and the new cabins...

Agreed, WBC cabin on 77W is way better than on any other older KLM aircraft.

Interesting, but this website doesn't allow me to start my journey anywhere but in Ireland...

Did you try airfrance.ie, or klm.ie? You must use the Airfrance website. I have no problem typing in another starting city.
