Can someone describe how UA's pass program works? Previously I've worked for AA where (until you reach 5 years of service) you pay a service charge plus taxes per non-rev segment. I did some time as a DL ready reserve where their program costs you an annual service charge, but individual flight segments (first or coach) are fee waived for domestic travel. I'm curious how UA's program is set-up. Does being management make a difference on service charges? (I had heard somewhere that at NW, there were different pass benefits for management and non-management).

Not 100% sure if its still the same after the merger but previously at UA you paid a mileage based fee depending on class of service plus taxes to non-rev. However, you had the option of flying at a lower priority (basically bottom of the list) and have all fees waived except for the taxes.
I remember hearing about some changes so I'm sure a current UA employee can probably give you more recent details.
And, yes at NW if you were management you traveled at a higher priority than the "regular" employees. That was one of the first things Delta did away with after the merger.

At UAL when traveling on passes, you travel on your seniority. We Nixed that Management stuff because UA retirees with 25+ years of seniority traveled at a higher priority as "Plank Owners", and the S-CO Group couldn't stand that as the S-UA group said Management flying out of seniority was Bunk! So if you're using Vacation passes you can board before someone using regular passes but I've got 29 years. I rarely Ever not make any trip I'm listed for. the fee is mileage based
for class of service.

No difference being management or not for non-rev travel on UA. All is seniority based. There are vacation passes which will give you priority but still based on seniority within that category.
