I'm starting a new job next Thursday and already I have 2 trips booked, JNB-CAI-LXR-CAI-JNB and JNB-CAI-AMM-CAI-JNB.

I have never flown Egyptair before, how's their service? According to their website it's 330 JNB-CAI and the other flights are Embraer 170, 738 and 320.

I don't see any mileage on their website, how can I find out what I will earn as a SAA Voyager member?

They're "dry" (no alcohol served).

The 333 is much nicer than the 332 I have heard because it has the more modern interior of the 77W, though it felt slightly tighter on pitch than the 77W

I earned double mileage only for my business class CDG-CAI-NRT on 333/77W but the flights themselves pleasant (especially for the price - which was the same as many Y products on the same route). Massive amenity kits and the beds comfortable enough. I slept just fine and watched the reasonable IFE the whole way. Cairo airport lounges also dry and a little small, but nice enough atmosphere.

The prayer shown with the safety video might be a bit odd for people from outside SW Asia/North Africa.

If the price is right, its OK, however its about the same as others, I'd opt with something else.

While an improvement over the old terminal, I was not too enthused from what I saw of the new Cairo facilities. The lounges were definitely a bit dour for being the carriers home base. MS should go see what a premier lounge is, by looking at Star brother TK's at IST.

At the end of the day, MS is what it is, a somewhat still a 2nd rate airline with hit or miss service delivery.

Thanks for the inputs, their price is the best for the routes I need to fly plus I want the Star miles so I'm a bit limited in choice.

I flew LHR-CAI on A333 which was new, great IFE, really nice seats and a joy. Return CAI-LHR very old A332 (With ashtrays in arm rest) - No IFE old school seats and nothing like the outbound. Even the service seemed better on the newer aircraft ! I would say its very hit or miss with MS especially with the aircraft type you get.

Well I just got back from my trip to Cairo and I must say that my Egyptair experience was pretty good. The 333 is a nice aircraft, luckily in both directions I had an empty seat next to me so had a bit more room. The crew were friendly, the food was good and the IFE wasn't too bad. The flight attendant in the Arabic language section of the safety video is a real hottie too!

I was less impressed with security at Cairo airport, I bought a bottle of water at duty free and they took it from me at the gate.

As for Cairo itself... what a crazy city!

I did LHR-CAI-BEY-CAI-LHR and the experience was dreadful. Quite possibly the worst flights I've been on.
The flight left Heathrow very delayed. No safety demonstration was shown on 3 flights, instead just a prayer on the IFE.
The seats were uncomfortable, the catering was almost the same on all flights (apart from CAI-LHR).
As someone else mentioned, there is no alcohol served.

We arrived at the new CAI terminal. The immigration staff were hopeless with long lines. They took our passports for inspection and we had to try and retrieve them before our connecting flight. 2 gin and tonics in the bar was $48.

I am not sure if they are hit and miss but 3 of the 4 flights were terrible. The return flight to London was operated by a bmi A330 which was MUCH MUCH better.

Im guessing you were on the B777 and not the new A333?

Here is my experience on the same route :

EgyptAir New A330-300 Onboard Wifi/Lounges BEY-DUB (by oa260 Dec 9 2010 in Trip Reports)

We were on an A330-200 LHR-CAI, a 737-800 CAI-BEY , A340-200 (was scheduled to be a 737-800) BEY-CAI
and a BD A330 CAI -LHR. Perhaps we were unlucky with them but there was a catalogue of problems, not entirely down to the airline but it still made for a bad experience.

On the LHR-CAI sector the child sat next to my sister urinated herself and soaked the seat cushion through which smelt absolutely terrible throughout the flight. The transfer at Cairo was really awful. There didn't seem to be any process. We were kept waiting for a long time, our passports were confiscated and it was only when we were due to board did we have to go and find out where they had gone. The staff spoke little English and weren't terribly friendly.
The security procedures were a joke- people were carrying what they liked through the scanners and they were going off but none of the security staff seemed to care. The duty free shops were full of tat- plastic pyramids and the like.

As I mentioned, the alcohol was reeeeeeeally expensive- nearly $50 for two gin and tonics.

On the Beirut- Cairo flight we were on an ancient A340-200 and the flight was particularly turbulent. We witnessed an Egyptian mother literally beating her child infront of the cabin crew. It was horrific. Overall just an unpleasant experience.

I don't want to sound negative about the whole thing but it just wasn't very nice and even for £550 I feel that it was bad value

I enjoyed reading your trip report. It certainly seems that the Business class experience is better! What takes you to Beirut?

since when does the bladder of a child become the problem and fault of SU?? That can happen on any airline in the world!! And none of them would be any different in the way they dealt with it...

Quoting raffik (Reply 14):

Again, not really the problem of SU. It could have happened on any airline. If it isn't against the law in the concerned country there is nothing they can do anyway.

Quoting raffik (Reply 14):

Cairo airport processes, again not exactly the fault of SU. They are subject to the standards of the airport.

If you had said the Check in was pathetically slow and inaccurate, the aircraft interiors tired and the meals mediocre that is all in their control , but not really the examples you mentioned.

This has nothing to do with Aeroflot- we are talking about Egyptair.

I've already said that there were aspect of the flight that were terrible- not showing a safety briefing before take off on THREE flights in a row?

The flight out of Heathrow was delayed 2 hours with no explanation and nearly didn't go at all because it would have gone past Heathrow's curfew.

The ancient A340-200 looked like it had been dragged out of the dessert and was in a very poor state inside.

One thing that did surprise me was the announcement during the safety video that cellphones can be used during flight.
