Flying out of TBIT next week to Australia on Qantas 94 and had a couple of questions that I was hoping someone could answer for me. This will be the first time I’ve ever been in TBIT. I normally fly to Australia out of T7 on United, but the tickets were way cheaper on Qantas this time so I thought I would give them a try. So my questions are:
1. Arriving into T4 on AA and have a 4 hour layover. Is it best to go straight to TBIT or are there more entertainment options/ less crowds if I stay in T4 for a couple of hours?
2. I’ve also read about a bus that goes from T4 to TBIT that avoids security again. Is it best to take the bus, or will security not be that bad getting into TBIT if I walk outside for an hour or so to stretch the legs?

Until the new TBIT opens next spring there is nothing to do inside security at TBIT. I'd stay out for a few minutes. You could stop by the Encounter for a drink and enjoy the view, ride the Parking Spot Sepulveda bus to IN-n-Out, or just sit at a restaurant on the pre-security balcony at TBIT.

As said above, there is really nothing airside at TBIT right now.
Either stay in T4 (which doesn't offer that much anyway) or go outside and go to the food court/restaurant/bar area that is land side at TBIT. This is actually quite a nice area.

I've never taken the bus, since I like to head outside and stretch my legs during the layover. I exit T4, walk around, see what's going on in T7 etc - it kills time, and you're about to spend the next 14 hours in a seat!
I've never had a problem with TBIT security. Admittedly I might have been lucky since there is an Asian push at midnight, meaning that the terminal can be quite busy, but so long as you are heading through 30 minutes before boarding I honestly don't think it will be a problem.

I would not take any LA buses, the area around LAX is questionable. The best bet is to walk from T4 to TBIT considering that you have some extra time. T4 is right next to TBIT. The terminals go T1,T2, T3, TBIT, T4, T5, T6, etc....

The only significant question around In-n-Out is "Would you like fries with that?" Bus or walking around LAX is just fine. A very diverse area, but safe. Maybe I'd avoid walking around in the wee hours of the morning, but that would be true anywhere.

Thanks everyone. Does anyone know about what time QF94 starts to board by chance. I've always wanted to get to In-n-Out burger but not sure if I would have enough time. I land in T4 at 7:15.

Also, one other question. I assume that the three late night Qantas flights departures are somewhat tied to QF108 from JFK correct? I believe passengers on that flight probably split onto the SYD, MEL and BRIS flights since they all leave within 20 minutes of each other?

That's correct. While all flights from Australia to Australia/NZ leave in the evening anyway, it is true that the BNE and MEL flights are timed sufficiently late that they allow passengers to connect from QF108.

All Qantas long haul flight start boarding 45 minutes prior to departure, so 22:45. That would give you 3.5 hours, which should be enough if you want to do it. I might suggest taking a taxi however, I find that if I'm not familiar with a cities bus network that I invariably miss the first 3 going to my destination since I was looking for the wrong number, at the wrong bus stop, on the wrong side of the road or whatever.

Please don't take a taxi. The driver will hate you, and with good reason. He waited in a long line and paid a fee in the hope of getting a decent fare, not a 2 minute trip to the burger stand.
Go to arrivals level and look for the sign to parking lot shuttles. Take the one for the Parking Spot (it's got huge spots all over) Sepulveda Blvd. lot. If asked, you are going to self-park, not valet. When you arrive if anyone asks (they won't) you are going to get a burger first. IN-n-Out is practically touching the Parking Spot building. Be sure to tip the driver a couple of dollars. Take the same bus back. Same excuse, you got a snack before heading to the terminal, or you left something at the terminal. Tip again.
Just one last thing... I will warn you that you might feel as though the seat back in front of you is quite close. The new QF seats on the A380s and refurbished 744s are excellent, but they are quite closely spaced together. They also have fairly tall seat backs which means that, to me at least, it feels as though less ambient light makes it to your "space". I generally find that the whole set up is a bit tight for the first 10 minutes...
...BUT I think the legroom is excellent. I can't really explain it, but it is almost as though the bottom of the seat in front of you is actually higher off the ground than a normal Y seat. This means that I can fully stretch my legs out horizontal.
It is an incredibly efficient design since it maximises leg room while allowing a denser configuration, and once you get used to the fact that the PTV is slightly closer than normal then it really isn't a problem at all. I'd take the ability to stretch my legs out over a more conventional configuration any day!
If you don't mind, would you be able to post a brief review of your QF experience here? I don't mean a trip report, just a sentence or two about your impression. It's just that I am in no way impartial when it come to QF, so I'm always interested in hearing a "third party" perspective, which is probably more reflective of reality than my rose-tinted lenses!!!

Even though I live 8 mins form LAX, I met a bunch of 8 Mileage Runners on an inbound flight who had a 3hr turnaround at LAX who wanted to go to In'N'Out, so we all took the Parking Spot shuttle - it's super easy and no questions asked (there's a special exit from the Parking Spot garage directly to In'N'Out!) - tipping is the right thing to do = v good advice!
