Dear All:

I am thinking about buying Economy Plus Upgrades for my upcoming IAD-OKC-IAD flights on UA. I only have M&M Frequent Traveller (Star Silver), so I won't be able to get seats in E+ for free, correct?

The seats I want (12C both ways) have gone down 5$ to 54$ each way since I first booked a few weeks ago. I'm guessing that they won't go down anymore before I fly next month (during the Christmas rush, unfortunately).

Could OS assign me to E+?

Viele Grüße aus Pinzgau!

As a UA MileagePlus silver member, I am eligible for E+ for free, but ONLY on the day of departure.
I'm not sure if StarSilver is eligible for that perk or not. But, either way, by the day of departure, other elites are likely to have taken your desired seat. That said, I'd be likely to pay for it, myself.
What's the aircraft type? If it's a CR7, I'd recommend an E+ seat far forward, because of the noise in the rear.

Yeah, it's a goddawful Mesa CR7.

I was thinking since I will be coming from International, I will probably just pass out anyway. But thanks for your tip. I will buy it on the way out.

Slightly off-topic, since when are non-elite passengers who purchase full fare Y not allowed to select Y+ for free? I thought that was one of the points of it.

I actually have a major gripe with UA's upgrade system. I spend a fortune annually on their top-end Credit card because I fly so much (checked bag fees, protection services, lounges, etc). In terms of luggage allowance, mileage accrual, and lounge access, the card seems to put me somewhere between MileagePlus Silver and Gold. So WHY THE HELL am I not entitled to complimentary E+ upgrades at Check-In?!?!?!

That's correct. Only MP members get Y+ free, Star Gold etc are stuck at the back with everyone else.

Until 3/3 even OnePass members weren't entitled to Y+

If you fly so much, as you say you do, you should have automatic access to E+ regardless of CC usage.

As others have pointed out, it's only available for Silver+.

OnePass Elite members had the opportunity to match their status to an equivalent level in the pmUA Mileage Plus program, which all allowed E+ access. Also, when my OP Plat number would sometimes replace my UA 1K number on pmUA-issued reservations hosted within Apollo, I would be allowed to select seats in E+.

"So much", for me, is 25 flights a year or so. Not quite enough to advance to the next level.

So you answered your own question then. They don't advertise the access to E+ seats and you don't fly the necessary amount of flights/miles a year. United owes you nothing, nor does United own the CC you use. They have an agreement with Chase to use their brand to give you two lounge access chits a year, you get a specific zone to board in (before any regular passengers), and one free checked bag.

So, no you aren't entitled to E+ seating.

Personally, the off peak, mid-day upgrade and access to E+ seating (albeit 24 hours before departure) is the only thing that separates a PS customer to someone that uses a CC to get these benefits. And quite honestly, it's a slap in the face to the premium customers who fly 25k+ miles a year. Being mid-tier elite on all three legacy carriers (at about 150,000 miles a year), it really grinds my gears when I hear announcements allowing early boarding for those holding a CC.

Enjoy the benefits that are *published*, not what you think you deserve.

When talking about the base CC (MileagePlusExplorer), I totally agree with you. But I spend $500/year for the MileageClub card. Three checked bags, unlimited lounge access, and some other perks. I would have expected to have at least some priority for E+, though I acknowledge that UA doesn't own the CC.

UA made almost $2,000 additional off me last year for E+ seating, because I have severe motion sickness that pretty much requires I sit over the wing, where E+ is.

(Also, I would have made the next level up were this still CO. MileagePlus' "30 segments" thing for Silver ruined my streak of several OnePass Silver years.)
