Saturday morning my girlfriend and I are flying to Cancun. Her father cashed in his miles to upgrade us on the first leg, but didn't have enough for the whole trip. I've looked on the airline website and it shows only 4 of the 10 seats already sold. I know 24 hours in advance I can check in and at that point be offered the upgrade if seats are still available, but when do airlines offer the upgrade to Priority members and other people like that..? Or is it just a first come first served 24 hours before. I guess I'm saying 6 seats still open...what are our chances..?

If you've never been to flyertalk I would start there. Its an amazing resource for information on upgrade procedures and other frequent flyer issues at every airline.

I've upgraded us before...normally the first leg and home leg so I understand that part. I guess I'm saying after the direct purchases, when do airlines start releasing the seats to FF and others. I will check out your website.

No one can answer that question unless we know what status you are and what airline. United gives seats to silver starting 24 hours in advance etc. If there are a lot of elites on your flight your chances are probably very low.

No status....USAirways. I know 24 hours before scheduled departure I can check in, and at that point in the past have been offered the upgrade if its avaible.

I'd cancel the mileage upgrade. US will likely offer you an upgrade for sale at checkin, but they only sell an upgrade for your whole itinerary, not individual segments. I thought the prices were very reasonable...I think $250 pp for ORD-CLT-MBJ. I passed on it that time without realizing that the CLT-MBJ flight was on a 762 with lie-flats...grrrrrr!

I'm not using any miles. The last 3 times on the same trip they have offered segment upgrades, but only when other parts of the trip were not available. With us flying 1st class on the first leg, I would think they would let us upgrade on the second if available.

Quoting EMBQA (Reply 6):

They offered you an upgrade for Free? Or for $$$? If they offered it for $$$ there were no elites left to upgrade. Otherwise, they would upgrade any elite who qualifited. Flights to places like Cancun often do not attract enough elites, or allow lower elites the opportunity of upgrades since those markets tend to cater to the occasional, non-elite, vacationer--not elite business travelers. But, YMMV depending on the airline.

How are you gaging 4 out of 10 seats sold? Keep in mind that the seat map only shows people who have selected seats. There could still be ten seats sold but only only four seats selected.

Hate to break it to you, but if you upgraded ORD-CLT on miles, you won't be given an option to pay for an upgrade CLT-CUN.

You can ask the gate agent, but don't expect the upgrade.

edit to add: Just checked expert flyer, the first CLT-CUN flight shows only 1 F seat available. The second shows 9s across all (and US really put it in this order) F/A/P.
