We're getting closer to the end of 2012. I thought it could be fun to make a thread on our favourite flying-experiences of 2012. Anything you'd like to share with the rest of us?
As the instigator, I thought I'd start off by sharing a story with you all: This May I travelled to TOS in Norway to experience the incredible nature the area had to offer. On my flight back to OSL, I had some lovely chats with the cabin crew, letting them know about my love of aviation. A few minutes later, one FA came by to ask whether or not I'd like to come up front to the flight deck to chat with the pilots. I ended up sitting there having the time of my life, and got invited to remain seated at the jumpseat until we landed at OSL - a truly amazing (and rare, these days) experience.
Any of you have something out of the ordinary you'd like to share?

Well, I've travelled in the jumpseat fairly often, so my KEF-FRA-KEF sameday roundtrip, all in the jumpseat, isn't that much for me.
My favorite has got to be three things:
1) TACA 007 Lima-Cuzco. The approach for CUZ is amazing and the Andes landscape along the way breathtaking. Will remember this flight my whole life.
2) Air Canada 001 Toronto-Tokyo. As I had only flown for most 9 hours before that flight, flying almost 14 hours was quite an experience. I loved every minute of the flight though! Also my first flight on anything bigger than a 767 (flight operated by 777-300ER). Have flown the 380 by now though.
3) Norlandair 536/537 Akureyri-Grimsey-Akureyri on the DH6 Twin Otter. Never been to such a remote airport as GRY. Located just north of the Icelandic coast, it's one of the northernmost airports in the world. The runway is quite short but of course no problem for the 'twotter'! Sat in row 1, which meant I was in a kind of a jumpseat as there is no cockpit door so I was effectively inside the cockpit. Also had my first goaround on flight 537 back to AEY because the ATC didn't work. The tower was facing some problems in connecting but as everyone knows everyone at AEY, the pilot just took up his hone and phoned the guy in the tower. He gave him a landing clearance thru the phone and we landed safely.

This year was probably the quietest flying year from the past 5 years. I will tell you though, if you are nice to the crew they will be nice right back. I will say that I flew on all three legacy carriers this year, made mid-tier status on all three. Just a shame that i wasted my money on the other two, because DL has really come a long way in terms of creature comforts, which to me is miles (no pun intended) above the other two and will be my favourite airline for quite some time.
Since I still flew more than 100,000 miles this year, but to fairly humdrum locations, I will say my favourite memories come from the people of the airlines. You fly enough, faces become familiar, you get to know the people working the desk and airplanes. Nothing says welcome aboard quite like a huge smile and welcome back Mr. xjramper.

I realize that this will sound strange, but looking back the one thing that stands out the most in my memory is the dinner I had on QF16 LAX-BNE back in February.
This was in Y, and it was fish of some kind (I can't remember what). It was absolutely delicious, and far and away the best Y catering I've ever eaten.
I guess in terms of "experience", I haven't done anything too out of the ordinary this year, in terms of exciting destinations or random happenings. What I think has been best about flying in 2012 for me, though, has been the diversity. By the end of the year I would have done 2 RTW trips, having flown everything from AT4 to A380, on 6 continents, with 9 airlines.

I have a three-way-tie for the top spot:
logging 12 planes in a three week period
flying JFK-ATL on my may to the Bahamas for a wedding on a beautiful DL 737-700, with the most beautiful stewardess-duo, who kept giving me the Biscoff cookies and full cans of soda (don't know if they usually do that in Y) because she heard me tell my mother I recommened them. Also adding to the experience was that, even though the flight was about 2 hours delayed, the crew was in the gate area keeping the spirits up! Kudos to them and I did take advantage of the inFlight WiFi to write to Delta and commend them on their performance that day!
Getting my father on his first plane since 1972, when his Convair ran off the runway at BDL after a bomb-threat was called in. We also both logged our first Q400s on that route, too!

Actually my greatest experience in 2012 was last weekend. It was my first flight as Senior First Officer in the brandnew Boeing 747-8 intercontinental.
It was a great feeling to fly a 2 months old airplane from FRA to IAD. It was a smooth and very special flight for me.
And of course I am thankful to be where I am and that I haven't had any incidents or accidents in 2012. I hope it stays that way

My best memory was on board a fully loaded Air Koryo IL-62M, at Beijing Capital Airport on a hot summer day. It was the beginning of a week of plane spotting in North Korea and it was my first experience on Russian jet. I was in the rear in a middle seat while a fellow spotter was in the window. The best moment of my flying year was when we taxied onto the runway and the 4 Soloviev D-30 engines spooled up to maximum power. I will never forget that spectacular sound and the face of the person next to me!

While there was nothing 'really outstanding' in 2012 but almost all of my flights were good to very good experiences this year.
Being nice to people - check-in, lounge, gate and cabin crew all the time is the easiest way to make every flight a better one. After a while, they will remember you and that helps everyone's day since right away the cabin crew knows they have one nice passenger aboard, or the gate staff person can destress for 20 seconds with you to recover from the rude idiot that was in front of you. If there is any options in service levels or comps (either sanctioned or unofficial) you can be sure the nice person is going to get it, not Mr or Ms Important (originally mispelled as Mr Impotent and I almost left it there). I was upgraded once this year while standing in line when the "Important" person ahead of me was told the biz cabin was full and it was just because I had been polite to that agent sometime in the past - so as soon as the self important person was rude the last seat was filled...by the check in agent holding it for me. I still pick that line when they are on duty just to be able to say hello but would never ask for a perq and have never gotten one - unspoken but I'm pretty sure we were near the edge of customer service policies that day even if I have high ff status with that airline.
The really important thing though is that the being nice isn't for trying to get comp'd - it's ot make everyone's day go just a little better...in over 100,000m a year, I might get out of plan comp's 3 or 4 times, but I benefit hugely by having much better flights on the other 95,000 miles.
The being niced thing works at ski resorts too (it was early season at Sunshine Mtn at Banff a few weeks ago, and simply being nice while they sorted out some of the hotel winter startup issues helped them, and us, for the rest of the stay - way beyond reasonable - and the snow was incredible too).
Oh - and like a dog or a bear sensing fear, they can usually sense fake nice, so you have to be real nice all the time!

An astonishing accomplishment by DL in of all places....ATL. Late flight in-bound to ATL due to TSTMS. Landed, and I had to run and take a tram from Concourse C to Concourse A for my connecting flight. Made it in 9 minutes and as I sat down in my seat (huffing and puffing), the DL app advised me my bag was planeside to be boarded. I arrived home safely, on-time and my bag greeted me on the belt.......and all on a Friday night no less.
Outstanding? You bet.
One more reason I've flown DL 126K miles this year in 94 segments. They treat me right, bring me home safe and my bag has NEVER missed a flight.
My thanks to all of you at Delta for a job consistently well done.

At GRR, we rarely play host to pax widebodies, so finally seeing a 744 only a few feet away from me at DTW (and later watching its take-off) was a real thrill. That day also gave me my second flight on a DC-9, and it will be a long time before I forget that smooth-as-silk ride.

I flew DL73 IST-JFK. I had a wonderful conversation with the Purser in the BusinessElite galley. She was a former Pan Am, 1965 hire. She was full of stories. Her original uniform hat from Pan Am, which she unfortunately no longer had, sold at auction for several thousand dollars. She had the Beatles on board after they made they comment about being bigger than Jesus. She handed them all bibles. In all her years of flying her worst flight was a bird strike out of NCE a couple years. The cabin had a orange glow from the flames coming from the engine. She had a Pan Am service pin on her vest. She told me that three other flight attendants on board were also Pan Am.

1) A few weeks ago I flew LHR-PAR (ORY) for the day on BA. On the return flight the plane went technical at ORY and after a long time it was obvious the flight was probably going to be cancelled as the baggage was coming off, it was getting late etc etc. BA put out a call for anyone travelling to LHR only, with just hand luggage to make themselves known. 10 of us were then driven in a limo and minibus at breakneck speed from ORY to CDG in order to catch their last flight from CDG to LHR. We got to the gate and had just put my bag down, when boarding started. Out of breath but very relieved I sat down in my second BA A319 that evening.
2) MEL-SIN (heading for LHR), on Qantas. Typical QF flight, nothing but eating, drinking, watch a film, sleeping, eating, drinking etc I fell asleep at one point and without realising it I'd missed the ice cream round! Waking up and fancing a drink or something I was somewhat taken aback when one of the stewards appeared from the galley with an ice cream for me. "You were asleep sir, when we brought this around....." Nice touch!
3) Not sure I would rank this as a favourite as such, but it was certainly notable. Mid November I travelled to HAM for the day, my return flight had been cancelled as part of the winter schedule, so I was now routed HAM-FRA-LHR. We took off from HAM and within a short while the flight got extremely bumpy, the pilot said it was a 200kph headwind and the plane was pitching and rolling quite violently. Whilst I'm not a easy passenger to scare, and I felt safe with Lufthansa and their A319, the bucking plane, the noise of the overhead luggage thumping about and passengers screaming (yes there were two girls ...or high pitched men not sure! doing it), it was certainly not a flight I'll forget in a hurry and I was quite glad to land in FRA.

LAX-NRT was quite a flight back in July.
It was the week of Fujirock, and I was just interested in getting from the plane to my hotel and getting all my preparations together for a presentation.....not about rock music.
Plane was a 77L and that was my first time on such a plane. Beautiful aircraft. In the aisle seat was a middle aged woman who looked like a company executive, and in the other side there was a 60+ African American man in a traditional suit. Behind me was 3 similar people who said not a word before the flight took off. Next to me (I had a window seat) was a deadheading Japanese flight attendant in street clothes on her way to her first assignment out of NGO.
Here's the funky part. After the young woman sat down next to me, all of a sudden, a large orgy seemed to have erupted in the aisle seats. That "professional" woman proceeded to french kiss the men sitting around us and shouted "F*** yes for FUJI ROCK!" at the top of her lungs. I looked at the young dead-heading flight attendant and her eyes were in shock... she said "Is this how Americans normally act on DL flights? I'm gonna die on my first assignment!" With a look of total disbelief.
Those guys were chatting up a storm the entire flight, but that didn't bother me from getting sleep.
We landed in NRT and they had no clue where to go. They found me outside of the bag claim up at the mall where I was getting a package I had sent to the post office there, and they asked me how to get to "Tokyo."
Although we were in Chiba, I snickered and said "You're IN tokyo!" and then proceeded to show them the buses into downtown.

My favorite airline memory this year isn't an airline memory per-say. Growing up, the DC-10 was always one of my favorite planes. I had my what I thought was my last flight on a DC-10 in the summer of 2002, on NW metal from SEA-MSP.
In September of this year, just over a decade later, I flew on that beautiful bird once again. This time co-pilot on the KC-10. Here's to many more years and many more flights!
