Buy On Board Items

Maybe flight attendants are best to provide this opinion...Recently spending some time on WestJet flights, I noticed there is a lot of advertising (especially on their LiveMap) of buy on board items that are of course, very highly priced.

I was just wondering, how many passengers take up the offers? I understand that many passengers on a longer flight would like to purchase a meal, but how often do passengers purchase $4 Twizzlers or Vitamin Water? Or $30 headphones (http://www.westjet.com/guest/en/travel/basics/inflight-services/food-selection.shtml).

I know a lot of other airlines have similar offers, but WestJet appears to more heavily push its onboard snack items.

LX's flights to Moscow are famous for their high turnover of duty-free items sales.
This excludes food and drinks intended to be consumed on board.

I often buy BoB food items when I am flying over a meal time or my layover is not long enough to buy food at the airport. On a DL JFK-SEA flight departing JFK at 5:30PM, I bought the 2nd-to-last sandwich and I was only sitting just behind the wing exit rows on a 752. The guy behind me was very upset that the only food available was snack boxes for a 5h30m flight.

$6 Heineken is not always worth it.

The $30 headphones are noise-cancelling earbuds and that's actually not a bad price for noise-cancelling headphones/earbuds. Most airlines with IFE sell headphones and WestJet does sell cheap headphones like all other airlines. A few airlines do sell blankets as well, but most airlines don't.

Looking at WestJet's BoB food and drink options, the prices and options are pretty much in line with the BoB programs on other North American airlines with such programs.

I usually do buy BoB stuff when I fly Delta since I'm flying about 4 hours or so. I tend to get the snack boxes they offer as you do get a lot of stuff in them for the price.

Our airline gives you free meals and wine/mai-tai depending on the flight, but that being said, I will sometimes buy our BoB meals if I'm feeling real hungry or having a hankering for different stuff.

Sometimes, if too many go unsold, I get a free meal "upgrade" from the F/A's. Or if I'm just being a good boy

It depends. If all they're offering are snack boxes and $3 cans of Pringles I pass, but if it's a longer flight and they have some real meals for sale, it's during a meal time, and I didn't have a chance to eat before the flight I might buy a sandwich of wrap or something.

Edit: Heck, often I'll plan out what I'm going to eat while traveling by looking at the airline's BoB menu and what food options are available in the terminal and decide which looks better, assuming there's enough time to grab something in the terminal during my connection.
