Hi guys,
Well I'm getting married in August and am planning a honey moon trip during the 4th quarter of 2013. I usually fly out of VIE, CDG or BUD depending on airfare.
I would be interested in flying to Southeast Asia or Australia/New Zealand as I've never been east of Hungary in my life, when I fly long haul, it is always to the US or Canada.
My first question I guess is how to go about finding really cheap long haul fares and second, would anyone be able to recommend nice honeymoon spots with a warm beach location that is either not too tourist or cheaper than the average European destination for instance?
I realize my questions are probably very vague and I apologize for that, maybe after I start getting feedback I might be able to figure out myself what exactly I am looking for lol, some of the trip reports I've seen on here are just so mouth watering..

I'd highly recommend Thailand, Chiang Mai in particular. TG do very good deals from FRA/LHR direct to BKK, then a cheap connection with TG up to CNX. If you opt for FRA you can hitch a ride on Thai's lovely A380
If you're willing to do a bit of European flying first, then have a look at SU's offerings to SE Asia. Finnair often have sales to SE Asian destinations too.

If you are aiming at a warm beach location, then I would definitely recommend MRU - as I have done this in the past, my personal research showed that the cheapest ticket you could get is on EK out of Italy (FCO or MXP). For example, a 10-day travel in mid-November would cost you €840 in economy (both flights would be around 6h each).
If you are willing to forego the beach dream and opt for something different, then my recommendation would be SIN - there is no other place in the world that I love more! Fare-wise, again it is cheapest to fly out of Italy (FCO or MXP) on TK - e.g., for a 10-day trip in mid-November you would pay €590 in economy (beware though - the flight from IST to SIN is close to 11h).

I agree with two of the previous posters, but keep in mind: I did my travelling with some buddies, not as a newlywed, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

I spent a few weeks travelling around Thailand and it really is a spectacular country.
As far as a honeymoon goes, I would vote for Koh Samui. They have a huge number of relaxing resorts to choose from that are all located along the kilometres of beaches around the island. We stayed for two nights at a place called Buri Rasa, and it was easily one of the best resort experiences I've ever had, and it was shockingly inexpensive given the quality. The airport on the island (an outdoor airport!) has flights to quite a few locations around SE Asia on Bangkok Airways, among others.
Chiang Mai is great if you're into the more cultural side of things. My friends and I checked out some of the bigger temples, did a jungle trek, and took a cooking class.
Koh Phi Phi and Koh Pha Ngan are more party islands, so not exactly targets for a relaxing honeymoon, but if you guys aren't into that, these islands are good times!
I didn't go there, but I heard Krabi was also a great vacation spot with apparently some awesome scuba diving.
Phuket...don't go to Phuket.

Too true. Probably the greatest trip of my life was to the South Island. Quite possible one of the most beautiful places anywhere.
My buddies and I landed in CHC, rented an SUV, and drove around. We spent an eventful night in a town called Wanaka because that's where our vehicle ran out of gas, and stations weren't open til morning. This also happens to be where the planet's nicest people reside.
We then spent a week in Queenstown, the "adventure capital of the world". Indeed it lived up to it's name. So if you and the wife are into skydiving, bungy jumping, white-water rafting, mountain biking, jet-boating, etc., this is the place for you. There's also a great golf course called Jack's Point that I highly recommend if you're a golfer. Again, more of a young person's party town, but I would definitely go again.
Lastly, there's quite a few very scenic areas along the west coast of the South Island such as Milford Sound and Franz Josef Glacier.

If you're going to SE Asia or Oceania, Royal Brunei offers some pretty low fares, you'll just have to do a few stopovers.

Keep looking for fare mistakes by the major airlines - there have been so many cock-ups and mistake fares recently. In the last few weeks there have been opportunities to book the following from Europe:
Lima for €299
Tokyo for €175
Abu Dhabi for €145
New York for €294
Hawaii for €494
Beijing for €95
Cancun for €281
They all start from different airports, e.g. MXP, BCN, CDG, but getting there to start the trip is cheap thanks to the abundance of low-cost airlines in Europe.
When the AZ mistake fares went on, some prices were even lower than this!
Some examples I saw (roundtrip, from Bari in most cases):
Tokyo for 33€
Singapore for 51€
LA for 92€
NYC for 60€
Abu Dhabi for 5€ (no kidding!)
London for 10€
Miami for 80€
Also, SU had a mistake fare of 150€ Europe-SVO-NRT-SVO-Europe some months ago. Another fare I remember was TK Europe-USA for as low as 200€.
So, if you look out, you can find some real bargains out there!

Fist off, I apologize for not responding sooner, man what a wealth of information!! I was just on holiday pirates last night and found a fare from Paris to Hong Kong for 245 euros return.
It's funny, Thailand is definitely among the places I considered, but I was abit disappointed when I saw some of the prices for accommodation, I looked at your recommendations above WestJet747 and I found nothing under 200 euros a night Is this the shockingly inexpensive you were referring to? I have no experiences in resorts so I don't know what to compare it to. I guess in my ignorant mind I was hoping to find dirt cheap deals which would make paying airfare worth the price...
Also is there a period I shouldn't look at traveling in for SE Asia because of the rain season? I am guessing November/December.
Are there any resorts in SE Asia, other countries I should research? I heard Sri Lanka can be nice.
I'd LOVE to go to New Zealand for sure as a Lord of The Rings and Hobbit fan hehe.

I find TK often has very good deals. I'm actually doing SIN-VIE next month on TK. They had by far the best price when I booked it in mid-December. QR also has very good prices for SE Asia.
As for Rain, avoid November-End January. We're just beginning to show signs of drying out down here in SIN.
