Hey all
Looking for some advice. I am planning to visit Dubai in May and have a number of options. I am looking at EK direct on the 773 or EY to AUH on the A330 and then bus to Dubai. I'll be flying in economy, advice welcome!!
Thanks

The bus via AUH option doesn't sound very convenient compared to a nonstop. The only advantage is that the A330 2-4-2 seating configuration is much better than 3-4-3 on the EK 777.

The bus journey AUH-DXB is easy, no more than 1hr.
You will have far greater comfort on the A330 in Economy simply because of the seating configuration. EY's IFE is not quite as good as EK's ICE system, but that's moot - you will have more than enough to entertain you for what is a relatively short hop.
The food is about the same.
If comfort is a factor, go with EY.

I would choose EY over EK (own experience), but in the end, at least for me, what's count: price and schedule! If EK would offer a much cheaper daylight flight- I would choose EK in the end!

Both airlines are a similar price and both arrive at similar times, about midnight. Has anyone taken the bus with EY? Do your bags go straight from plane to it? The reason I ask is with EY it is some 150euro cheaper to book to DXB than to AUH. Is there anything stopping me just getting to AUH and making my own way?

I flew with EY MUC-AUH and then took the bus to XNB (read my TR here: http://www.airliners.net/aviation-fo...ums/trip_reports/read.main/218469/). Your bags don't go directly to DXB, you will have to take them by yourself to the bus in AUH. On the return sector, you can check your bags at EY's city-check-in in DXB, they will go straight to DUB and you'll recieve your boarding passes there.
Where are you staying in DXB? If you are staying near the Burj Khalifa or Dubai Marina, the EY bus will not take much longer there than a taxi or the metro from DXB airport. Overall if the price is 150€ cheaper on EY, I would definitely choose EY.
This is the place where the bus will drop you http://goo.gl/maps/eOsga
A metro station is directly there.

It is always very delicate to give an advice to someone you know very little about !
As most commentators here stated it, EY service is better than EK. The seating configuration is also better on the A330 than on the B777, except if you are traveling with 2 other persons...
The bus from AUH to Dubai is free and will drop you at Dubai Marina : it can be a convenient location depending on where you are intending to stay in Dubai.
At last, I would not worry about a possible 50-100€ difference between the fares of EY and EK as this is the kind of money you are going to "burn" very quickly in Dubai anyway...

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear. If I book with EY to AUH it is 150 dearer than if I book EY to dubai using the bus also. So can I book to dubai and pretend I am planning to take the bus and then just not use it!

You don't actually 'book' a ticket for the bus, this is only to kinda promote their bus service to Dubai. You can use the bus even if you only have a ticket to/from AUH on EY/partner airlines. In the bus they will only check the BP of your former flight.
So back to your question, yes, you can book a ticket from DUB via AUH to XNB (btw the code for Dubai bus station) and don't use the bus and your return to DUB will not expire.

Interesting that they wont cancel the return. Wouldnt EY expect the OP to check-in in Dubai?

AFAIK, EY doesn't even know that you'll take the bus from XNB to AUH. I booked MUC-AUH-XNB, too, but the AUH-XNB sector didn't show up in the reservation, only the 'real' flights, albeit the bus has a flight number. As mentioned before, the bus itself isn't bookable, you just go there and step in.
