A Delta Airlines pilot had to make an emergency landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on Friday night after experiencing a fuel leak, authorities said.

Officials at Sky Harbor said Delta Flight 65, which left Atlanta and was supposed to land in Las Vegas, was diverted to Sky Harbor just before 7:30 p.m. after reporting engine problems/

Here is the flight in question:

Appears to be a 752. It appears the flight left rougly an hour and 20 minutes after the emergency landing. I wonder if this was the same aircraft or a replacement that was on hand in PHX?

Interesting. From the diversion point, it couldn't have been much further to LAS than it was to PHX. Maybe 10-15 more minutes?

If it were an engine failure they'd have no choice. By regulation they have to go to the nearest alternate in time of flight. The captain might not have had a choice. He would have had to go to Yuma if that had been closer.

Depending on the nature of emergency, that 15 minutes could make a big difference. Sometimes getting on the ground quickly is the best choice. Maybe the weather at PHX was better to handle the situation.

I think I saw a replacement fly in later yesterday but I have no other news.

The plane came in and all passengers and crew transfered to another 757 already on the ground in Phoenix. The plane that diverted was repaired and left on Sunday the 6th. No flights out of Phoenix were cancelled due to reduced Saturday flight schedules and added overnighting planes in Phoenix.
