Should I Non-rev Or Buy Ticket On UA 787

Hi everyone:

I am going to Los Angeles in a few weeks to visit a friend of mine for the weekend and I have non-rev travel benefits on UA. Having said that, I want to take this opportunity to fly the 787 from IAH to LAX but I have been noticing that it seems like the 787 seems pretty popular right now as the flights seem full.

I found a fare for the dates I want to LAX for under $300 - it would include flying the 787 IAH-LAX and then flying a 757-300 LAX-IAH. Do you think it would be worth it to just buy the ticket so that I have a confirmed seat on the 787 or do you think i'd be alright taking my chances? BTW I am flying on a Friday and taking the 7:35 AM departure out of Houston to Los Angeles.

Your opinions are much appreciated!

I don't know the correct term for it, but if you have non-rev ability then it would probably be good for you to know your priority for getting a seat. You could be at the bottom of the list so your chances are reduced dramatically. Also, you should have a way to check the loads on your flights and make a decision based upon that as well.

The Friday IAH-LAX flights I would guess will have quite a few non-revs listed and be pretty full with paying pax as well.....IMHO it is a crap shoot for ya if you don't buy a ticket.

Have a fun and safe trip.

Yeah as a fellow nonrever-not on UA though- I would wait to fly on it. Unless you have a lot of money burning a hole in ur pocket lol..you will have a chance eventually to ride it. It just really depends on you though..especially with these teething issues they've been seeing, it would suck to buy the ticket and then have it subbed for a 757...

Though because of the new LAX-NRT 787 route, the flight would probably still be subbed for a wideobdy, wouldn't it? I'm asking out of curiosity, as I can only assume that this is how they get the plane to LAX, not to confirm it.

Mesa, yeah that's totally possible. I thought UA wasn't flying these birds international yet though..aren't they just flying them domestically right now? Familiarization runs? But yeah for all I know if it were subbed it very well could b a wide body as well..

They started LAX-NRT with them last week, that's the only reason why I thought they'd sub a WB.
