I would like to go New York sometime this month but I'm not to sure on the weather. So I'm undecided if I should go or not. I don't flying and landing in snow. Does anyone know what the weather is like in January?

It might snow. It might not. Chances are better for no snow then snow. At the same time you shouldn't worry. If the weather is,too dangerous the pilots won't be flying anywhere. Or just wait till April.

New York is great in winter, especially with snow. Are you trying to avoid snow because of delays or because you think it's unsafe? Because it's not. If it's too much snowfall they will suspend operations and clear the runways. No need to worry, it's as safe as in sunny weather.
Don't worry, John K. Fitzgerald airport (re: your thread title) is prepared for wintry weather.

Since New York's airspace (JFK, EWR, LGA) is probably the busiest in the country, most snow events don't have much lasting effect on routine operations. We are prepared for all kinds of weather.
If your concern about weather is because of sightseeing and tourism, all bets are off. New York has a terrible climate: snow and ice in winter, rain in spring, thunderstorms in summer. If you wanted to visit New York in winter, Christmas would've been a better time because the lights, the decorations, the mood, everything is fun in New York around Christmas. January can be a little dreary.

I want to thank all of you for responding. I think we will head off to NY at the end of this month I hope. My GF is not happy of flying specially for 5hr 30 min from LGB in California to JFK. She hates turbulence however slight and she fear that we will get some as we get towards the east coast. We'll see what happens. Thanks again

You'll get more going over the Rocky Mountains unless there is a storm along the coast.

As someone who was born and raised, educated, employed and still lives here on Long Island after 32 years, you have the potential for different weather issues during each of the seasons here. Snow/Ice storms in the winter, fog issues in the spring/autumn, severe thunderstorms in the summer.....hell, we even had a hurricane (although it was called a "Super Storm" up here) hit us in October, only to have a snow storm a week later. We just "roll with the punches" and keep moving. There are plenty of things to do in good weather and in bad weather. And seeing as you are traveling LGB-JFK, I assume you will be on my airline where the pilots are used to dealing with weather issues in NYC and from coast-to-coast, they'll keep you as smooth as possible. I have been on many transcon flights with my airline and will admit that they really do a good job keeping you in smooth air even with nasty storm over the country
