Best Way To AUS From London

Hi.

I'm off to Austin, Texas for RTX 2013 at the start of July, and i'd like to know everyone's opinions of the best way to get there. Obviously i'd like them as cheap as possible, but i'm willing to spend a little bit more for a more interesting routing/aircraft.

The first thing that spring to mind for me is LH's A380 from FRA-IAH. Maybe a short hop from LCY-FRA on LH's E190, then a Delta A319 from IAH-AUS. That would make 3 new AC types for me, but is obviously more expensive than something like a DL LHR-ATL-AUS.

What do you think?

Hey,

DL does not fly IAH-AUS. Your only option is UA. Take. BA from LHR to DFW and connect to AA.

Take whatever carrier you find interesting from LHR to JFK and then take B6 JFK-AUS.

FRA is a bit too far out of the way if you ask me.

I personally just did BA/AA last week DXB-LHR-DFW-AUS and the AA flights to DFW and AUS are nothing to write home about unless you're looking to ride on an MD-80 from DFW-AUS.

I can't bring myself to fly on BA's long-haul product anymore, unless i'm guaranteed the 773 with the new IFE system. Not familiar with AA's Y product. The MD80 could be interesting.

Any experience with DL's 764's long haul?

I do UA (Formerly CO aircraft) from IAH-LHR often and the 777 hard product is nice, both up front and in the back. BA and UA have four flights a day on the route and it will 5 by the time you fly it. Sadly UA has pulled most mainline off the short AUS flights so you'd most likely get an RJ to connect unless you want to take a bus/shuttle to HOU and pick up WN and really add airports and airlines  

If you are looking to pick up aircraft for the logbook the FRA-IAH flights are nice and the prices normally comparable to LHR but I have no idea on the LCY to FRA option.

UA and AA can route you through ORD also depending on what airports you are looking to "try".

So I don't see how this is a deal breaker just cos it's JFK. You'll have to do exactly the same in ATL or DFW. Only difference is if you're on one airline all the way, the bag will be tagged for the second leg but that hardly makes a difference. Anyway VS will probably do that anyway, if they have a deal with B6.

Also - if BA aren't good enough for you, don't fly DL AA UA or VS cos they aren't better.

I used to fly UA LHR-ORD-AUS but thats a bit boring . Maybe also look at EI LHR-DUB-JFK A320/A330 then connect to B6 as they have an agreement with EI .

Another option would be LHR-FRA LH FRA-JFK SQ then B6 .

You will enjoy AUS its a great city .

Well if BA isn't good enough then I think you're best option is to stay home. I have always found BA to be better than all the US airlines as well as KLM and AF. I can't comment on LH but choosing them would still involve a sector on a US airline, albeit a short one.

Having seen pictures/videos of AA's 772 interior, i think i'd rather swim  

Going to fly US LHR-PHL on the A333, then US PHL-AUS on the E190. Then back US AUS-CLT on the CRJ900 then CLT-LHR A330. Works out the cheapest over all the other carriers, and i get two new NB types. Thanks for your input.

After riding on BA's 744, I have to agree with your thoughts regaring using BA longhaul. Their 772 was fine but the 744 was like being in a can with a bunch of other sardines. I will avoid their 744 in the future.

Interesting. I flew LHR-PHX-LHR on a BA 744 last year and those were my most pleasant transatlantic flights to date.

Winner, winner. Fly the Maddog while you can. Plus, it's an easy connection, and a really short flight (35 minutes in the air).

Do we know for sure that AA will be using the 77W on the LHR-DFW route? If that is set in stone then i would definitely be up for that.

Sorry if i sound like a dopey prat, but what is the Maddog?

As was stated before, it will be a fantastic aircraft and transferring in DFW is a breeze compared to other ports of entry.

KVS shows AA 50/51 as varying equipment 25 Feb-10 Mar, and then a 77W from 10 Mar-26 Oct.

Timing for AA 51 on 5 Jul is 0930-1335 local.

Yepp, I am booked on AA50 (DFW-LHR) in August and the 77W is scheduled on that flight.

Keep in mind that AA's 77W will have 3x4x3 seating in economy, compared with 3x3x3 on BA. That extra seat in each row absolutely makes a difference    . I'd personally avoid the new AA aircraft strictly for that reason.

I've flown a few times on EY's 77W which is in that config and it felt quite spacious actually. I'm not a big guy and the 77W is mighty wide

All booked. AA51/AA1543/AA1404/AA78. 77W and MD80. Can't wait! Booked Seat 18L on the 77W both ways, which is at the back of the Main cabin Extra, only £50 more so thought it was worth it.

Yep, 3-4-3 in economy. 3-3-3 in Economy Extra. 31" pitch in Y.

We flew from Amsterdam to Houston and rented a car and drove to Austin. We would have rented a car in Austin anyways, so the money save between the four people flying more than paid for the rental for two weeks.

I have flown LHR-AUS a couple of times. I did AUS-ORD-LHR on American once, and then IAH-LHR on British Airways. In both flights I experienced meals that were not fully thawed. I liked BA's service better overall. I have also spotted Lufthansa's 380 in IAH. So, that might be worth trying for sure. If you want to eliminate the hassle of airline transfers in IAH, you may take the Greyhound or Megabus from Houston to Austin. I do that and find it quite convenient.

For AUS, you will have to fly into a gateway US point like JFK, EWR, ATL, ORD, DFW, or IAH. There are no direct flights from Europe.
