On Saturday evening 1/19, VS 76 departing MCO for MAN flew through a large flock of birds shortly after departing Rwy 35L about 300' agl. The A330 sustained serious damage, resulting in the shutdown of the #1 engine and vibration in the #2 as well. I have seen pics of the "good" engine and it sustained heavy damage, with some seriously bent fan blades. All involved did a great job leading to a safe outcome.
GVKSS will be stuck here for a few days as both engines need replacing. I am told that there was damage sustained to the leading edge as well, although I don't know if it requires repair. A couple more birds into the #2 and this could have been much more of a story. Returning from a flight on a twin and needing two new engines is exciting enough.
As VS is already dealing with snow and weather delays, this can't possibly help their scheduling.
