I think you will enjoy your AY flights. I've had nothing but good experiences on them. This coming from someone that has lived in the US for the past 20 years and flown on US domestic airlines. Compared to them, they are very good. Service is typical Finnish..very professional, not much chit chat from the cabin crew but service is efficient. Drink runs are frequent. Food is hit or miss. On the LHR-HEL run you will most likely get a cold sandwich and a few drink runs. Haven't honestly flown AY on longhaul recently.
In short, AY is punctual, professional and very textbook. You will have a good flight with them
And HEL airport is one of the best in Europe to connect in.

Excellent airline with a very neat and easy to navigate hub. Seat comfort on the A330 is great and the AVOD system has an acceptable variety of movies to choose from. Food however isn't their strongest point. Cabin crew are very polite and professional.
Helsinki Vantaa Airport is one of my favorites in Europe and you'll enjoy transiting there. The Finnair lounge accepts cash if you want to pay a visit.

I flew that sector a couple of years ago and got a hot meal that consisted of pasta and chicken. If that's no longer the case then I guess things do really change quickly in this industry!

Hi,
I agree what said above, I think you can expect a nice clean cabin on A333, ok seat comfort and a professional, attentive crew but yes, small talk isn't a Finnish thing
Food is their weak point, though I like their new sandwiches on short hauls. They have AVOD on A333/343 but the film selection is rather limited, and better bring your own headset.
I would say Finnair offers a solid mid-range product.
HEL is designed for transit passengers so hardly any problems there, you don't even need to leave the non-Schengen terminal.

Flying JFK-HEL-LHR is quite a backtrack. Why not go direct with BA?

Finnair has been offering some great Y class fares from NYC as of late. A coworker just booked the same because Finnair was hundreds less expensive than anyone else, even lower than Icelandair.
For some the cost savings provide greater value than the added time.

First off, thanks for the replies. Very helpful!

I've never flown on AY before and I've never been to the HEL airport. Basically I'm doing it to add a new airline and airport to my list.
This is actually part of a MSY-MIA-JFK-HEL-LHR-LAX-DFW-MSY mileage run on AA, AY, and BA. I won't be staying overnight in any of the cities...just traveling straight through. Should be fun.

I flew with Finnair CPH-HEL-HKG back in 2011. On the A319 and A340-300 (Old livery ya!)
And it was very good! The seats was very comfortable and with VERY generous recline. The IFE had a standard selection of movies and tv shows, no outlets sadly.

I doubt that AY can make any money on such cheap tickets.

That is quite a mileage run! Will you be able to check in for all your flights at MSY?

I doubt it. It would be nice though. The computer system might not be able to even comprehend what I'm doing lol

Quoting FDH (Reply 16): Flew them last year JFK-HEL-OSL r-t. Really enjoyed the flights, real good fare, and transiting through HEL is really easy and relaxing.
Thanks for the feedback. I wish the 9th would hurry up and get here!

Thanks for this interesting info on AY, as I'd like to try them to HEL this year (from LHR) and have a look around the city too at the same time. AY have alwas struck me as a pretty good airline and well run. They offer some of cheapest fares to the Far East too, so it's interesting to see the comments. I will also look forward to my first AY flight later in the year.
