Given the amount of travelling that we all do I got to wondering about the most unusual sight you had witnessed whilst on a plane. This was triggered by my last flight home from the USA to England, about an hour or so before landing a guy in the isle seat opposite me in Club got out his hand luggage from the overhead bin and set about polishing his neat brown shoes. he took about 5 minutes to do this and they looked just fine when he finished.A passing stewardess was intrigued as well.I would not say he was a businessman but was clearly prepared for the event.
Anyone else witnessed some unusual/bizarre happenings?

Well I saw a Qantas Stewardess who accidently poured a glass of whine in my friends lap.
Last year while flying with Estonian Air SAAB340, the female Stewardess gave the cupcakes too much time in the oven, and the facial expression she made when opening the oven was priceless!
On Kenya Airways I saw a boy aged around 5, whom despite having no legs managed to walk around the aisles with his hands. Kudos to that fella!
On a flight to Vienna with El Al Israel Airlines, a Stewardess slapped my dads hand while he was reaching for a cup. (The Stewardess forgot to give him one with his Coca Cola)
On a flight to DXB with Austrian Airlines 763ER, I saw a girl who had a giant teddy bear on her lap during the intire flight. (Ps. Austrian Airlines takes the prize as worst long haul carrier)

Several years ago on LH, while I was in a window seat somewhere between HEL and FRA (or FRA and HEL), an F/A gave me a bread roll - but not in the way you'd have expected him to do it. I reckon he must have been a cricket bowler or something because he was in the aisle and two rows of seats away from me, yet his aim was absolutely perfect.

Not witnessed, but the strangest thing I have ever done on a flight. I was a non-rev sitting in first class on a transpacific flight. The manifest showed I was in the engineering department, so the FA at some point in the flight had asked what I did. When one of the first class passengers couldn’t get his seat into bed mode, the purser tried the override. It didn’t work, so she turned to me, handed me the manual and the inflight tool kit and asked me to see if I could fix it. The passenger had no idea who I was, but I was able to disconnect the override latch that was stuck while laying on my back underneath the seat and get it into full flat bed mode.
When approaching our destination, the passenger needed to get his seat up. He couldn’t figure out to do it and no flight attendant was eager to help, so I got up, manually forced the seat into the upright position and locked it into place. He asked “who on earth are you?” I said I was an engineer who worked for the airline. He asked if there is always an engineer on board, and I said no I’m traveling on my personal vacation time, but I’ll do anything to help out. He was immensely grateful and the purser was very thankful too. I don’t know why she didn’t just ask us to switch seats, but the revenue passenger was happy and very understanding and even called it exceptional customer service. I smiled and thought in my head that exceptional service is having seats that never break, but was thankful for the compliment.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Although not on a plane, while on the AMTRAK Metroliner to New York Penn Station, a young lady was short of money for the fare. She stripped completely, borrowed a man's hat, pranced up and down the aisle and collected donations from the other passengers. She and a US Marine going home on leave went into the lavatory and exchanged fluids and cash. I was 16, If only I had the nerve.

On a United A320, DEN-BWI, I saw a grown man reading the safety card to his 8-inch tall rubber duck. He attempted to order extra food and drink for his duck, and took it to use the lav.
Though not quite onboard, I had an interesting experience in PHL while connecting. The beeper on one of their motorized cart wheelchair thingies was broken. So a huge black guy was walking in front clearing the crowd with a red broom. This actually served to cause more commotion than it fixed.

I'll bet that he uses the duck to use the HOV lane.

I once got treated to a most amazing unexpected view of the International Space Station after leaving EZE (Buenos Aires) on a night flight to IAD.
This was a United (old pre-merger) flight. The A/C was a 767-300 and I had a business class window seat left side of the plane. We had already reached some altitude somewhere around 30,000 ft. The plane was in the dark and the night was pitch dark. I often use the window as my PTV during flights.
The Space Station came so bright and clear I could spot the solar panels it was gleaming with light! I really got lucky that night. I could see it for a good while. Never seen it for such an amount of time actually. It was quite a treat and so unexpected. No idea if I will ever be able to see it like this again.

Quoting tb727 (Reply 3): I had a 74 year old Flight Engineer take his pants off a couple months ago after takeoff.
I have to confess I thought what the hell....... then I looked at the US flag on your profile and realised pants = trousers! If they had been pants as we call them, not that would have raised a few questions!
I was on a SAS flight last year from OSL-LHR, mid flight the sun was setting, and I was looking out the window when to my surprise and amazement I saw another SAS 737 passing over and around us in like an arc heading in the opposite direction, it lasted only about 2 seconds and yet it seemed to be in slow motion almost. It was close enough to read the SAS on the tail and I was so suprised to see it in the way I did, that it didn't occur to me to take a picture until it had gone. It was almost sereal.

Hi,
it was not really an unusual sight, but more of a joke from a Russian flight attendant. In 2001 I was on Siberia Airlines flight from HAJ to OMS. Airplane was a rather old looking Tupolev 154M. We could taxi to the runway, but unfortunately we could not take off. The FA announced they have some problems with the engines and will return to the terminal. One of the passengers then said to her sarcastically "Yeah, thats typical for Russian engineering!". So the FA answered "Well, American planes break in the air, our's luckily on the ground!"

That would be quite interesting.
Duckman also attempted to recieve an extra boarding pass, and an extra pair of headphones. The seat next to him was unoccupied. I am so glad I was a row back and across the plane.

On a flight between Dubai and Casablanca there were two Saudi guys in the row in front. They started singing and had very fine voices. Listening carefully above the aircraft noise I realised that they were singing what was on the in-flight menu.
Once on a flight between Vienna and Dubai, while waiting in the airport my mother had seen a toy Shar Pei puppy that she thought was cute. So I bought it for her. Later, on board the aircraft, she got it out to have another look just as one of the cabin crew approached. The crew looked surprise because she thought for a moment that the dog was real. When told no, it is a toy, she asked "can I cuddle it?" We let her and soon we had other members of the crew queueing to stroke and cuddle it.

People standing literally at landing, really right on touchdown, on Aeroflot in Russia in the aisles getting their bag down from the overheads
Significant amounts of duct tape all over the place in the interior of an ATR I just flew in December in Myanmar, especially disturbing given the F100 that crashed 2 days earlier in the same area.

AIRLINERS.NET CREW CHAT OPERATOR
Alitalia A321 from Catania to Rome. Right after takeoff, someone's cell phone rang for a good 30 seconds but there was no attempt to turn it off. Being a young naive kid I was scared that we might crash because of that.
Same thing happened when we were about to land at JFK on a LAN 767. Didn't really scare me, but it was annoying as hell.
