Hope not. Diverting from SNA and even ONT to LAX for mechanical issues is nothing new... short runways in particular at SNA have sent flights with hydraulic issues to LAX for decades, in case the brakes don't work and they need the long runway. You feel like you're taking the corner on two wheels looking at Bristol (is that the road name) on a good day at SNA, so you don't want to do it with technical issues.

It's not uncommon in multiple airport regions to have a different airport be the takeoff alternate. Flights from LGA that need to come back and land will often do so at JFK. Departures from DCA have diverted back to IAD.
The procedure if a flight needs to land immediately after departing from one of the 30s at SJC - if they haven't already turned south - is to just continue straight ahead and land on one of the 28s at SFO.
Flights from SNA and LGB have landed at LAX on numerous occasions after losing an engine or having some kind of mechanical problem.

Thats a non event unless you lose all your power ala Us Air in the hudson this happens more often than you think. All the airlines I have worked for in 26 yrs have had bird strikes on a regular basis. Most times not a big deal..Although I have seen bird strikes tear up some stuff though.
