Domestic flights in Japan are ridiculously expensive. I found that redeeming FF miles is very useful within Japan. I flew HND-HIJ on the 787 that way. All domestic NH flights (using UA miles) are only 6000 miles each way and there are no taxes or fuel surcharges....

It depends on who you're flying.
Go through Starflyer's website or Skymark's website, it's cheap i think.

Maybe you can use ANA's "Experience Japan Fare"? Take a look at their offer: Link. And JAL also provides tickets at reasonable prices, if you book in advance: Link.

Try Jetstar Japan or Air Asia Japan. No frills but from the searches I have done almost always the cheapest. As above domestic fares in Japan are very expensive!!

Interesting, didnt know that. I was in Tokyo two weeks ago and dropped the idea of riding another 744D due to rediculous fares.
Another opportunity to consider is the ANA Air Pass. I bought it for 5 legs a year ago and it turned out to be approx. USD 700 which I found reasonable. Only condition is that you need to arrive into and depart Japan on a Star Alliance carrier.

Yes megabucks but a wonderful experience - I flew on a pair of Nippon's 747Ds a fortnight ago and both flights were so nice. Cabin crew very kind and the big old winglet-less jumbos are unique. Good luck with your trip.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

Thank you. I will do my search again. I thought that maybe Japan was like China were the fares are expensive far in advance and cheap close to the departure dates....

There is a deal, which I know JAL have (but I confess I don't know how you book it), where by if you fly into Japan on a One World Carrier you can apply for a Visit Japan Fare of JPY10,500 for 1 sector, JPY21,000 for 2 and so on up to 5 sectors. I believe ANA have a similar deal for Star Alliance customers.

Both JAL and ANA have it. Thank you! I think I want to try Starflyer on at least one segment. I read a trip report on them and they look very promising.
