Hi fellow airline fans
What was your best, worst or weirdest experience with airplane meals?
Best: On board KLM from AMS to MEX, it was a delicious steak with american potatoes, desert, a little piece of bread, a little piece of chocolate and fruits.
Worst: On board TACA from SJO to LAX, an awfull sandwich (don´t know if to call it like that), it was dry and cold with mayonaise, mustard and ketchup at the same time (yuck!).
Weirdest: On board NW from MSP to SEA, I got a single piece of rye bread with nothing, just the bread, no jelly, nothing.
What´s your excperience eating 33 000 feet in altitude?

Best: VS Upper Class... of course! LHR-JFK
Worst: Flying Colours, burnt breakfast from IBZ to LGW

Also for commendation: BA snack service LHR-CPH. Hot ciabatta cheese and ham roll, water, fruit cocktail, and choc bar.

Best: Western Airlines, 1980, ANC-SEA. Poached salmon with roasted potatoes and carrots. Salad tossed and dressed at your seat. (I forget the dessert....)

Honorable mention: BA, 1999, LGW-DFW. Braised beef tips with pearl onions, served with mustard mashed potatoes. Wanted to write BA for the beef recipe--it was that good!

OK, for eco:

best: no doubt, and every time, AI (Tandoori Chicken Masala with Pulao Rice, Papads, mithai (sweets) ... everytime a different meal, often regionally varying.. Mmmmhhh! It really tasts like restaurant food and is only covered with aluminum foil and not 'properly closed' like with other Airlines, though fresh!

worst: UA: "Chicken or Pasta??" Big grin

weird: AF: I booked TXL-CDG-NSI (Yaounde/Cameroon) and ordered a seafood dish: while on the TXL-CDG leg, the others got some disgusting cheap cheese and ham, I got really good salmon, shrimps.. Perfect! On the long-haul, the fish was just disgusting, the sauce seemed to be only consistent of flour.. Way back, I ordered a Hindu Meal. I got the same meal as all the others (beef!!), but with a paper saying: "This meal does not contain any pork". Well, these dilletants should know that Hindus in particular don't eat beef (for me it didn't matter since I eat beef but I only wanted to test it out..!) Big grin

By the way, be prepared that this thread will be grounded in the polls forum soon!  Wink/being sarcastic

Best, lunch on CO37 EDI-EWR, this past Thursday (14Oct). Had seared salmon with shrimp topping. Best meal I have ever had on a plane.

Worst, beverage service on a CO flight IAH-AUS. A hair (not mine) in my drink. See my trip report on this one.

Weird, haven't had any fall into that category yet, fortunately!!

This topic will likely get moved to the Polls/Preferences group before too long, if I had to guess.

Worst: Well, don't know what it was but I once got a VGML on LTU which was just disgusting... I guess, they've just out a little bit of everything in a mixer..

Best: All Nippon Airways NRT-CDG on a 744.....this was one of the best meals I have ever got! Delicious Japanese steak and also a very nice fish dish....plus can can eat all you want during the flight in Y class!

You should've gone for the chicken!

Best: United Airlines while flying MIA-LIM on a 752 - Chicken and Rotini Noodles in a Tangy Dijon Sauce. Wrote them for the recipe, and now I eat it at least once a month!

Honorable Mention:

  • LAN while flying MIA-LIM on a 763 (in new colors!) - Tortellini in Alfredo Sauce.

  • Copa Airlines while flying MIA-PTY on a 73G - This tasty sandwich. Have no idea what was in it, but it was really good.

  • LAN while flying LIM-MIA on a 763 - Another tasty sandwich. Something I've come to realize is that airlines make GREAT sandwiches.

  • Worst: Copa Airlines while flying PTY-LIM on a 73G - Some Enchilada thing. I'm not particularly sure what it was, but I know that one of the lavs was occupied for the rest of the flight!

Weird: NuevoContinente while flying LIM-MIA on a 762 - A bag of salted peanuts. Good, but not enough for a six hour ordeal with a three hour delay.

I'd say that one of, if not the, best experiences was on one of my TAM flights from CDG to GRU... one of the flights on which I was upgraded to Classe Executiva... Big grin

Entrée: Season's Green Leaves Served with Gravad Salmon and Smoked Duck Filet

    Soup: Cheese Cream

Main Dish: Filet Mignon in Creamy Pepper Sauce served with Green Beans, Purple Onions and Vichy Carrots

Dessert: Plum Tartlet and Mirabelle Almonds

    After Dinner Cheese

And all that served with warm rolls...

The dinner on LH's first class came quite close to the one on TAM, but wasn't quite as good - although the presentation was a bit better on LH... though, then again, in TAM's case, everything was served separately, not everything on one tray at the same time as quite a few airlines unfortunately do...

I should also mention that I've had superb meals on LH in Business Class, horrible ones on LH's Economy Class, superb ones on SAA in Business and Economy Class, mediocre ones on Singapore Airlines and very, very good meals on Royal Brunei.

Best: Well, I have two best, a dinner and a breakfast. Best dinner, consistently on Swiss from BOS-ZRH. Their chicken dinners, rolls, and side dishes in economy truly are excellent. Best breakfast was on Kontinentalny Avialinii (Continental Airways, codesign PC) charter flight from SVO-SSH. It was huge blinys with jam inside, rolls, chocolates, decent cofee and juice, and some side dishes. Plus seconds were offerred.

Worst: Sibir's (S7) all dried fish and stale bread dinner flying from DME-BAX. Yuck. The flight was absurdly cheap though and it was on an swesome IL-86 so I can't complain that much.

Weird: Aeroflot from SVO-KBP. They claim that their galley is broken (apparently they claim this on every flight on this route, for years) and serve a bizzare combination of meat pies, dried fish, juice, and chocolate bars. I guess thats not that weird, but they could just say there is no full meal on this flight rather than pretending the galley is broken...

I don't think this should be moved for 2 reasons. One, I don't like going in the other forums. Second, this is about airlines and flying on them. People talk about F class beds and Y class F/As here all the time, and this relates.

    Anyway for me

Best: Swissair ZRH-LAX I was upgraded to C because Y was full. I had ordered the LFML as I always do and did not expect a C class LFML, but I got it.

First off, I have never been offered so many bread rolls in my life. And as we all know, germanic peoples know how to do bread

first course: Cold Chicken breast. This tasted great and was a nice protein to get the appitite going

Second Course: The LFML on the flight was beef, which made no sense, and as I don't eat beef, they brought me one of the normal meals which was an 2 amazing cakes made from corn meal with a little big of cheese. They were like giant, hot polenta cakes. yum

Salad Course: Mixed field greens, tomatoes, great vinagrette.

Desert: They were scooping fresh rocky road ice cream for others and I got a wonderful fruit salad, it was actually what acted as my breakfast on the way to ZRH

There was much, much more that I cannot remember. they just kept feeding us

    Best Y class: LH PHX-FRA
Dinner was chicken breast in white wine sauce with fluffy white rice and steamed vegetables that did not have the consistance of baby food for once.
Breakfast was cold grilled eggplant (aubergines for those who don't get that name), bell peppers and onions in a whole grain pita. It hit the spot perfectly.

    Worst: CO DC-10!! ONT-DEN
The food was chicken that looked like a bunch of little aliens (I am not kidding) in a horrible orange sauce. Also, the F/A was so annoying and patronizing (I was 3 or 4 at the time, but still could not stand coochie coo types) that my parents had to tell her to go away

Weirdest: I cannot remeber an exceptionally weird meal, except for the looks of that CO chicken

Best – definitely long-departed Wardair where in economy you were served a salad starter, followed by Chateaubriand, coffee and then they came round with a dessert trolley from which you could choose from several mouth watering gateau. The meal was served on Wedgwood china with real linen, and ladies had a carnation on their tray. Less than 2 hours after this excellent meal, they brought a massive afternoon tea!

Most disappointing – BA on LHR/SFO. Departing LHR at 10.30 lunch was served after two hours – no starter, some very small portion of beef casserole (or beef substitute as it was so tasteless) with mashed potatoes, and a meagre desert, plus a "fun sized" Aero chocolate bar. There was no further food service for over 5½ hours by which time many people were complaining of hunger and were given a miniature packet of pretzels!

Worst – Virgin Sun on LGW/LPA. Advertised that their food was fun. No starter, some tasteless chicken dish and rice and two marshmallow sweets with chocolate sauce! Also Aeroflot on LHR to Moscow - one orange and black tea!

MOL on SRB's latest attack at BA: "It's like a little Chihuahua barking at a dying Labrador. Nobody cares."

    Here we go.
Best (that I have sampled) VS LHR-HKG-LHR, Mates+ Upper Class.
Steak Sandwiches, amazing salads with fab dressing, proper chocolate ice cream and of course very sexy FA's to party with for the two nights in HK...

VS LHR-LAX U/G to upper class. The rack of lamb - delicious

Worst - (Apart from the usual uk charter breakfasts) AA LAX-LHR economy. Luke warm beef with STRINGED CARROTS. Had to eat it all as I was starving and not having eaten since leaving LAS that morning...
A few hours after arriving home the whole lot came up... and yes the CARROTS were very visiable. YUK.
I hope American have improved as I am travelling LHR-JFK-LHR in a couple of weeks.

Weirdest - Air 2000 some time ago, an omelette that was sort of green but very light and tasted kinda good! mind you its all pretty weird.
Look forward to reading the rest...

NorthWest Airlines on AMS-DTW in eco. Horrible food that was cold, and tasted stale. Meat was akin to packing material...

Delta Airlines flight 2147 ATL-SJC a couple of years ago (when they served meals for free). Very juicy, tender chicken cooked in a creamy mushroom sauce with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus served with a salad and a bread roll. For dessert there was a very delicous chocolate mousse with grated chocolate generously sprinkled on top

Some kind of fusion food on Air France CDG-BOM. It was good, but really couldn't make out what it was made of. It did say chicken with pasta though...

On all of my travels on AA, I recall having good hot meal experiences on 3-hour segments in coach (this was over 10 years ago, I haven't flown them since)

During a light snack flight from RDU to DTW, a NW flight attendant spilled the drink all over the tray table, and I was upset to the fact that he didn't offer additional napkins so I could clean the mess up.

I am unable to recall any meal service that was "out of the ordinary."

As for AF, it seems always to be weird food. the fish I described might have just been caught in the Seine before take off and was hence declared as fresh, although the chemical plant might have been around the corner.. weird, the french kitchen is in my eyes amongst the best in the world, but AF does not take any benefit out of it

Best: I really like Alaska's warm sandwiches, especially when the cheese is all melty and the bread is crusty. Mmmmm.

Worst: Air France LAX-CDG-FCO During dinner they ran out of the first choice so I got stuck with fish. Then during lunch (what happened to breakfast?) they served fish as the only choice. Then on the flight from CDG-FCO they served fish again. I hate fish. So for that long amount of flying, I ate rolls, cheese, and cookies. Those were actually pretty good.

Weirdest: Have any of you had Alaska's snacks? Once there was roma tomato/garlic pita chips. First, you should not give garlic to people in a confined space. Second, those things were absolutely bizarre. The texture was strange. They tasted like nothing I have experienced before or since. And they were very crunchy but not in a good way. They took work to eat. Come to think of it, they were hard and crunchy like melba toast.

Or once they served "Go mix" It was some sort of protien trail mix. It was crunchy and gritty. There was also soy nuts in it. They only good thing in it was the yogurt coverd raisins. The strange thing about it was that I'm still not sure whether it was good or bad. All I know it was gritty and there was a lot of it.

What is is with Alaska Airlines and their bizarre snack service? I say bring back the warm sandwich snacks!!
