In early May I'll be flying HKG to LAX. Actually, I'm flying LAX-AKL-HKG-LAX business class but no one seems to want to book that at a reasonable price. UA wants more than $16,000. Thats USD, not HKD.
I can get reasonable fares into and out of AKL, its the HKG to LAX that's ridiculous non-stop. I've got two reasonable alternatives, CA via Beijing, and OZ via Seoul. Same price, around $2200. I want to stay on Star Alliance.
Here are the questions:
1. If I transit in Beijing, can I get to the Star Business lounge during the transit, or am I stuck in some transit limbo? The CA web page is unclear.
2. On the long CA flight (983) the aircraft is shown as 777-300. Do those aircraft have true lie flat seats? I guess some 777's have them, some don't and seatexpert/seatguru offer no help.
3. On the long OZ flight (204) its a 777-200(ER, I think). I can't figure out if they have the new Quantium Smart seats or not. Except for the horrible name, they sound nice. The old seats don't.
I lean toward OZ because the arrival at LAX is a bit more convenient. Any advice on transit experiences at PEK versus INC? CA versus OZ?

I can't say with 100% certainty, but I am pretty sure that the seat is identical to the PMCO seat seen on the CO 752, 764, 772, and now the 2-class UA 763s
It is the CO product then it is a full lie-flat product. Most people I know who have flown it absolutely rave about it, but others (especially people taller than 6 foot) complain that the bed isn't long enough to sleep comfortably.
I hadn't thought of that. The price is right but I need to make 3 stopovers, not two. I'd have to stay a day at PEK or INC, which means more time and the cost of a hotel room, but I've never seen Seoul. I guess I could look around for a day.
I'm still wondering about the type of seat on OZ INC-LAX. If I overnight in PEK there's no worry about the transit process since I would head into the city for a day. Haven't been there in years.
