With an airplane like that it is always easier to pick an airport where an A380 flies into regularly. So the handling is a lot easier and AMS is such an airport.
I am pretty sure they were too heavy anyway to land right away, they had to dump fuel and they maybe could do it on their way to AMS instead of doing an overweight landing in OSL, CPH or GOT.
